Lumia 640 not reading sd card

My brother's lumia 640 was starting to misread the sd card, sometimes bringing errors which would go away with a restart. Last week, the card failed to be read, even after removing it and formatting it. He can read the card on other devices but not on the phone. We even tried with a new card but the phone cannot detect it.

Additionally, the phone has slowed down a lot. So what can we do? It's on windows phone 8 denim version.

Should he factory reset it?
Should he upgrade it to windows 10?

Definitely a factory reset. upgrading to windows 10 will be a time consuming and its unlikely that the OS has to de anything with this. so hard reset is what i would have done .

Also if the new card is not detected points to another possibility of hardware failure, but lets not jump to the conclusion so early. Hard reset should be the first troubleshooting step.

Yeah, let's do the hard reset first.
Then we can see it It's hardware problem or not.
Noting some phones and some sd cards don't like each other.

Tried a hard reset but the sd card still doesn't work - tried a few cards of different sizes
