So my wife and I both have 920's. Last night she plugged in her phone as she normally does. Only when she woke up she could not unplug the phone from the charger. I assumed the little tabs on the micro USB connector may have bent or malfunctioned so I pulled on it with a little force and nothing. So I flipped on the light and to my surprise I notice its all melted and mangled. After wiggling and working a bit on the connector I was able to get the plug out. Here is what i end up with:

Luckily, I was able to get it out without actually pulling the connector out of the phone and it still works thought im going to have to shave that bump off the bottom of the phone.

As for the Micro USB cable it was a Belkin 6' Micro USB cable I got from Best Buy or Wal-mart. (Lost the original cable some time back.)

I will be getting a DT-900 for charging her phone from now on and just using the cable connector if I need to. I am in the process of backing up all the pictures and videos off her phone to PC right now so if this happens again at least we will save everything. Onedrive is on as well but just in case.

I am going to reach out to MS/Nokia about what the possible cause was, as well as start a **** storm with Belkin as apparently not all Micro USB cords are created equal.

Anyone else had a problem with their charging port melting? or bad luck with cables?

i would think the charger or phone would be more to blame than the cable...but a crap cable is always possible. either way, it does suck when it does happen regardless.

My issue was a bit different, but that does show not all cables the same.

My Lumia 1020 USB cable snapped so I decided to buy a new one. I bought three different cheap cables and all of them had the same problem--my phone charged really slowly and my PC would not fully detect my phone... The same wall adapter with the original USB cable would fully charge my Lumia 1020 from 0% in roughly two hours. These new cables would take 8hrs to charge from the same adapter and the same socket! And if I began using my phone during charging, the battery would still drop (though it would drop slowly) rather than charge up.

Once my phone turned off (0%) when charging with one of these cables. My phone then went into an endless boot-battery low-dead cycle for 9hrs at a stretch and still didn't power up. I was thinking my battery had worn-off or something. I took my phone to Nokia Care and they used their own cable and viola--my phone powered up instantly and began charging normally (fast). So I bought the original USB cable from them and my phone charges normally now. Then I came to know that not all USB cable are equal. Only the original OEM cable works best.

Sorry, didn't see the photo of the phone:( However; I would still suspect the cable. The connector on the cable has pins as opposed to sockets. Pins would be much more susceptible to damage that would cause a shorting condition that you likely had.

Judging from the photo, it appears the issue was likely with the cord.

That's why I went with the Belkin name branded cable. I usually just go on Ebay or Monoprice and just get what ever is the cheapest. I figured Belkin is a name brand and it should be a decent cable. I have had the cable a year or so, but I couldn't have imagined it to fail like this, it has always been a good tight connection. /shrug
