I bought a Surface RT for work, then a Surface Pro for my own use. I really wish I'd saved my money and bought a Surface RT instead of the Pro. Because of the nature of a tablet I use the Pro almost exclusively using the Modern interface and rarely use the desktop. The RT would have done the job. I have Windows 8 on my iMac which I would use to do anything which requires a desktop machine and it performs various server duties for me (like running a Squeezebox server, iTunes so my Apple TV always has access to my movies, and my Sonos has an always-on feed).

The Surface RT does a brilliant job running Remote Desktop too - so you can do more intensive work on it that way. My Lumia 920 provides internet connectivity via tethering so it's almost perfect!

IMO opinion the combination of a decent desktop machine and a lesser tablet does the job for most people.
