Windows Central Question

Lumia 950 & 950XL memory expansion now stated as 200GB not 256 and 2TB when cards catch up.

I have a Lumia 950 XL on pre order and just looking at the MS store site and noticed it says the phone will support up to 200GB micro SD card. What happened to the 2TB promised at the launch event? I just went and re-watched the launch video and Panos Panay says 256GB card now and when the cards catch up 2TB! Searching around there seems to be much confusion now. What other specs are being changed before launch?

Odds are by the time SanDisk or someone comes out with a 2TB SD card, the 950 xl will be antiquated (in tech time).

They may need to run a intel or AMD chipset to allow memory allocation up to that size, unless the arm architecture has the capability, not sure. I would tend to believe that the device would need a x86/x64 architecture to address memory spaces that size.

microSDXC supports up to 2TB in theory. currently 256 cards exists but are not widely available. SanDisk now makes the 200gb card which is available more widely (although at a high price point).
I guess they didn't want to say 2TB or 256GB as no one can put their hands on those just yet. But if you are still using 950 XL when those cards come out, they'll work

Both true. "Will" is a future point in time. Launch "will" refers to when someone makes such a card. Site "will" refers to when the device first ships because that will be all anyone can have THEN.

I have to redact my last post. It appears that after further reading, I was incorrect, and that Qualcomm has supported up to 2TB SD cards for a short while now. LG has a phone with their 410 chipset that also will support 2TB chips.

The site also mentions this in the fine print:
5The device supports SDXC 3.01 standard compliant cards. 200GB cards currently available.

The following is written in Wikipedia:
The Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) format, announced in January 2009 and defined in version 3.01 of the SD specification, supports cards up to 2 TB (2048 GB)

As far as I concerned, I clearly heard what Panos Panay says "Theoretically" up to 2TB. So THEORETICALLY Doesn't mean really up to 2TB. Hopefully that kind of devices can reach it to that level.
