So...is the Lumia Debian Red a codename or an actual name?
What could we be getting? It's actually WP8.1 Update 1 I think.

Lumia Denim (the words will be colored in a printed jeans pattern) that would be so awesome.

It's a codename, but it's not WP8.1 Update 1. WP8.1 U1 is the software, specifically the OS. Lumia "Debian Red" is the next firmware for Lumia hardware. They are related to each other, just as "Cyan" is the most recent official Lumia firmware that coincides with the WP 8.1 OS release.

Firmware in this context is basically the code that allows the OS (which is mostly hardware agnostic) to talk to the specific underlying hardware. It's similar to hardware drivers and the BIOS in a PC platform. Firmware and OS updates are often released around the same time to allow new functionality in one to be used by the other, but they are two different things. One can be updated without updating the other in most cases.

Just kind of weird they chose a "D" color that shares part of its name with a fairly well known OS. Granted there aren't a lot of "D" colors to choose from; at least that don't have the "D" as an adjective modifier like "Dark" or Deep":

List of colors: A–F - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I mean, at least they didn't choose "Dirt", or "Dim Gray" or "Donkey Brown" or "Drab".

I'm kinda partial to "Dogwood Rose" myself....

Hopefully it brings camera improvements to the 930 and fix the purple display issues

Debian red may be Windows 8.1 GDR1 or GDR 2 ,, comes in Alphabet Order ,, A-Amber,, B-black,C-Cyan, D-Debian red,, Hope it will be rock

Its already told by Daniel that the Lumia 830 and 730 will come with Windows phone 8.1 Update 1 + Nokia's Lumia Debian Red Firmware!
As for GDR2,its still way too early as GDR1 has yet to be announced COMMERCIALLY!

Its the internal codename for the firmware, not the official release.
Its also in alphabetical order.

Heres how the firmware's have been:
A = Amber (official), dunno what the codename is/was.
B = Bittersweet shimmer (leaked), Black (Official)
C = Cherry Blossom Pink (leaked), Cyan (Offical)
D = Debian Red (Leaked), ???? (Official)

This is actually really interesting! I didn't notice the alphabetical thing until you just said it!
