Lumia920 for ?520!!!

Can't see the problem. Thats still ?80 cheaper that the comparable iPhone, with a far better camera, more advanced screen, NFC, Wireless charging, etc etc.

If you want the latest and greatest Android phone, i'm sure its got a comparitive price.

****, its only ?50 more than an S3, which has been out months, and i'd imagine at launch was more expensive that the 920.

Here's how the average person buys a phone.

"Does it do Instagram?"

No, but its camera has an advanced feature called OIS, which...

"I don't care. How about Angry Birds Space?"

No, there is a unique Nokia package that...

"I don't care. Does it have the iTunes?"

Nope, it has X-Box Music, which...

"I don't care, I want the iPhone."

The ONLY thing that will win market share for WP right now is MUCH lower pricing.

Not everyone cares about Instagram & Angry birds. The camera will sell the phone on its own. A bit of good advertising of NFC, wireless charging, and those will become must have features too.

For someone that wants a cheap phone, theres 5 other WP launch devices. For those that want the flagship, or the best camera, etc theres the 920.

The camera will sell the phone to the tiny subset of buyers for whom the camera is a principal concern.

It will NOT sell the phone in sufficient quantities to make it a serious contender in the volumes necessary to position WP8 as a "third ecosystem."

And looking at the pricing of the other devices as announced, there is no "cheap WP8 phone." For example, in this country, the 820 comes in at the same price as the Galaxy S III.

The hero phone that saves the day for Windows Phone won't be a specced-out specialty hobbyist phone, it will be a phone that delivers a LOT of features for a low cost. We're still waiting for that phone.

Ironically, Apple's screwups gave WP an opening, and now Microsoft/Nokia/HTC's screwups could be giving RIM (of all companies) an opening to take #3 (especially if RIM gets the pricing and availability nailed).

Oh they do friend..they do.

I have had countless people ask me if it has Instagram First...they lose interest right at the gates...
It has to be much more than that...in fact, they should tie up with Insta guys and bring out two new styles exclusively for WP...

I like you Miller. We think alike lol. The media can write all they want about BlackBerry's stock woes but the fact is that BlackBerry has increased their subscriber base to 80 Million so that means there are a lot of people currently carrying BBs in their pockets. They have a strong presence overseas as well as in the enterprise world. BB10 is a robust platform that delivers an amazing touch experience with ridiculous flow and multitasking. If BlackBerry nails the launch of BB10 with their CURRENT subscriber base alone they have a huge head start. Don't sleep on BlackBerry folks. WP8 needs to hit hard with wow factors and incredible pricing if they want to be the 3rd and not the 4th platform. Basic economics is supply and demand. Demand dictates pricing and right now there is not a large demand for Windows Phone. Also, Android took a huge market share because of cheap handsets available through subsidized plans. Visit any wireless carrier's website in the USA and you will see a plethora of android devices for free with a 2 year contract including the amazing Galaxy SII. We need to compete in a similar way.

The price of a phone in developing countries is a serious consideration, and Nokia has addressed that need nicely. But in places like the US, phone prices don't matter at all. Just look at all the people buy iPhones "off contract" for $650-$850 right now, plus the tens of millions upgrading for $199-$399, just because the could. Add in all the other users who play "phone of the month" and the pricing argument gets weak.

Fair pricing is, well fair. Apple overprices all their products because their profit margins are criminal. But underpricing products will get you nothing by bankrupt. I might like a Lexus. But if I can't afford it, I have to settle for a Toyota. Both will still get me to work.

I have to admit, I was a RIM skeptic, but their demo at BlackBerry Jam was pretty amazing, and their SDK is out now. The Android porting capability gives them a big leg-up on apps too. Their only Achilles heel has been availability of the handsets in Q1 2013, but if they get everything right out the gate (versus MS, which is still stumbling), they could ride a wave of upgrades from their base into third place. They have the advantage of 80 million users worldwide, many of whom will spring for the new stuff. If only 1/4 make the switch in the first half of 2013, that will propel their sales to outstanding levels (and result in more BB 10 devices than installed base of Windows Phones as of today).

Yes, I really did just type that. *blinks in disbelief*

The problem being that the average user simply isn't willing to pay full price for a brand new, unproven ecosystem. Certainly not the same price as for one of the proven phones (and in Nokia's case, they're demanding MORE than that for the 920).

WP is better, but it's not "BMW versus Chevrolet" better. Users won't see the "better" in the initial purchase experience.

Windows has to wow with pricing, as they always have in the past.

Just like a Windows PC with Apple pricing wouidn't sell well, a Windows Phone with Apple pricing is equally stuck!

Actually it does instagram now. And with native access in WP8 it'll probably do it better than the iPhone, IE: integration via Lenses.

But I agree with you about pricing and not sleeping on BB10. As a Canadian I want to see RIM succeed. But I want WP to succeed more so I hope Nokia, HTC, etc get aggressive with pricing. Also it'll make it easier for me to buy a 920!

Still if u ask me its not cheap.

Not to sound like an arse, but... the Lumia 920 is anything, but cheap. Personally, I was dreading it would be more, although I took comfort in the fact they would want to keep it cheaper than the iPhone 5.
