I tried it and I just couldn't get acceptable performance. Most times when I tried to send a message i would get "Just a moment" for a while, though eventually it did work. I was using WiFi so my connection was not the issue. Is that normal?

I see NO reason why one would need a FB messenger app on a WP. It works great in the native messaging app. No fuss, just works.
