server space hasn't been a big deal (for me) since 2001 or so.
I hadn't tried converting documents to office format , but I've fixed a ton of files that wouldn't work from one version of office to the next, with OpenOffice. then I realized office was the problem, not the needed software. nothing would surprise me from Google software as much as they change things. there onLine beta wares and microsofts ui/os rewrites have taught me to keep what works and discard the trendy updates until they're vetted.
Server space? You mean servers you have at home? And the majority of people don't have their own dedicated server somewhere so in that case Office 365 is very valuable.
As far as document conversion, I've never had an issue with office docs from MS to MS versions. Whether it be 2003, or 2013. The only issue ever present was when the switched to the .docx file format so older versions of Office couldn't open them. But a 2 second free patch from MS fixed that.
I just spent 6 hours at work last week taking a slide presentation from Google docs and converting it to PowerPoint that some of our management needed.
Then when I showed them you could create a PowerPoint online or locally and edit locally or online with PowerPoint they quickly released how stupid it was to even use Google Docs.
The best part, is if you open a PowerPoint that's on OneDrive, you can choose to edit it with your local desktop PowerPoint application. And when you hit CTRL-S it saves directly to the OneDrive file. It also tracks who's editing it, both online and on desktop. That's all with Windows 7 too, not Windows 8.
