VOIP - Voice Over IP. Internet phone calls are kind of the wave of the future. Carriers don't like VOIP because people don't use their minutes. I have Skype on my computer for making phone calls and on my Nokia N8 for making phone calls.

Video calling is going to be my use for it. I never use anywhere near my call minutes. Funny that on the site it lists all the platforms for it and windows phone is not on it. I hope the video calls will be free for windows phone users. And not just to windows users but if I call my friends who have apple phones.

In France you get video calling directly through the carrier, and it works great. No 3rd party application is needed. I don't know how the rest of Europe is. This is something U.S. carriers need to implement.

I have an unlimited plan but I though the reason was other. Why would Microsoft want to hurt their relationship with carriers?

I think carriers are coming around to the idea of VOIP. At first AT&T in the states wouldn't allow Skype on the iPhone. Then they allowed Skype on the iPhone, but only when you were on WiFi, not their data network. Now they allow Skype on the iPhone without restrictions.

3 UK were the first network in the world to allow Skype calling on their network, many years ago (2007) and brought out Skype mobile handsets too.

Needless to say mr gadget had to have one. (I have 2 and they are still in use today)

Apps for most 3 phones were available too. Those were the days.

MS might also put out some of those interesting devices that have the full OS but no radio. They can use wifi and Skype and avoid all the monthly charges. You can use VOIP on the iPod Touch and Samsung has a version of their Android Galaxy S II without the radio that they are actively encouraging to be used for VOIP. It's not available in the US though.

they want to impelement skype in all their services

like windows- xbox -windows phone 7 - office - Lync servers etc
