I'm sort of wishing they'd set up their own tech sites, or on the case of Mary, work with Paul Thurrott on Winsupersite.

I agree. I respect the few that were there back when ZDNet was creditable. Mary was one of them and are largely what built that website. Those running it today have completely different interests than that of technical honesty.

Most likely just for clicks and use it as medium to voice their own biased opinions along with their preferences as opposed to being impartial and distant from their own opinions. However after all in essence it is about site traffic at the end of the day.

This is an easy one, two reasons:
1) windows phone gives Ms more control over its own non-wp products
2) without windows phone Ms becomes a patent troll
