mossberg reviews the Lumia 920, finds it heavy but high quality

It's a pretty fair review overall. He is absolutely right that it is heavy relative to other similar phones. The only point I'd disagree with him on is the accuracy of the speech recognition. While TellMe doesn't match Siri in terms of functionality yet, I've found that it's accuracy is at least as good or better. It's almost flawless when I use it to send texts or search. As long as I speak clearly, it nails it perfectly nearly every time.

I swear I feel like Apple is paying people to moan about weight and glorify how light the iPhone 5 is. No one I have handed it to has sat there and said "Oh my gooooood its sooooooooo heavy how could you even use this" inf act more often then not I get "It is heavy but not a bad heavy more like a solid heavy"

Its especially bad when they have to break out percentages because we all sit there and say "Why yes my phone does actually feel 40% heavier now!" the fact he spent a whole paragraph breaking it down for us like that is ridiculous.

Also this is a blatant lie and horrible "journalism"

"But my searches of the app store on the new Lumia failed to turn up plenty of popular apps available on the Apple and Google platforms, such as Instagram, Dropbox, Google Drive, YouTube, HBO GO, Spotify, Pandora radio, United and Delta airlines, MLB, Scrabble and Starbucks."

Lets break this down shall we?
Dropbox-No Official App
Google Drive-No Official App but we have skydrive integration
YouTube-Are you dumb? ITS THE FIRST DANG APP!
HBO-No Official App
Spotify-No Official App
Pandora Radio-No Official App however it is coming soon with a year of free Pandora Plus or whatever its called
United-No Official App
Delta-
Are you dumb? ITS THE FIRST DANG APP!
MLB-No Official App
Scrabble-No Official App but isn't Words With Friends the more popular clone anyways?
Starbucks-No Official App

I will grant you its still lacking some key apps which is a problem but I mean come on at least make some effort before making crap up.

I actually doubt he used it at all. In fact I bet you its still in the box and he just grabbed the usual bits from all the other reviews and said the same thing.

Uhhh I'm talking about the screen on the Lumia 920 in the review video. I think its from Nokia marketing.

Well fine what a way to ruin an otherwise great poke at the iPhone. Most likely it has something to do with the way it was recorded and the camera and light sensitivity and white balances and what not. I notice at least when I point a camera at an LCD the rest of the image either gets out of whack or the LCD is too bright to see. Of course I would assume they are using much more sophisticated devices for that purpose but it sounds like a fine theory to me.

Funny. Most people i have shown my phone too immediately comment on how big and heavy it is. They did that even with my Lumia 900 and that was a little smaller and lighter than my 920.

Not that it bothers me... I am cool with the phone and I love it. But to anyone used to an iPhone, yeah it's going to seem like an enormous boat anchor.

The iPhone 5 is a feather compared to the 920 I will grant you that and people do notice the size difference but all the people I showed it too said they wish their iPhone was just a bit wider too like the other phones out there instead of being taller. I still don't see the weight being a massive issue but hey I guess for someone it probably is. I just never got the feeling it was a negative weight more like a healthy heft.

Walt uses percentages, so as to magnify both the thickness and weight. Nowhere did he mention the actual thicknesses nor the weight:

"The Lumia is 17% thicker than the Samsung."

Well gee, just how many millimeters is that Walt?

And not one mention about Nokia's great apps, like the maps/drive. Oh, wait, if he mentioned that he would then have to contrast the Nokia mapping to his beloved Apple...

Classic trick people use. Percentages can make things seem much worse then they really are. My sales improved by 100% but I don't tell you I only had 1 customer yesterday and 2 today and in fact that's pretty pathetic.

In addition he is only comparing published numbers he doesn't mention the tapering or anything. Did you know the 8X is only slightly less thick then the Lumia 920? Most people won't even mention that in their reviews because it reels really thin because of how the edges are tapered.

The iphone 5 is incredibly light compared to the Lumia 920. But I really don't think the Lumia is heavy. Mossberg can't give a positive review for a windows phone. And of course, every phone has to compared unfavorably to the iphone.

In reality, I expected a much harsher review from Mossberg. The fact that he didn't (or couldn't ) rip it to pieces, is really quite positive. Of course, that the Lumia 920 has been out for over two weeks before Walt got around to reviewing it, is a major snub, in itself...

Well that and he avoided mentioning any feature superior than the iPhone like OIS, PureMotion+, HAAC, PureView (low-light), but grouped it all into 'great features' in his pro/con section in the video review.

Wow, he didn't mention those? That to me is a hallmark of biased review. I've seen those reviews and they are all from die hard Apple fans. I'm surprised people are not calling them out more. They should be relegated to sites like AppleInsider.com, not prominent news sources like WSJ and NYT.

It reads like he wrote it 2 weeks ago, and just now got around to posting it.

If Apple made the Lumia 920 everyone who likes to suck on the iOS teet would write the phone feels "Substantial", "A premium solid device". Anyone else makes it and it's a heavy brick that needs a lift to raise it to your ear.

If he's going to compare with the iPhone and Android then he should also note what the ecosystem has that they do not (xBox, kids corner, the NFC that the iPhone doesn't have, etc.).

Can't say I'm surprised. Apple could put out an empty box and he'd give it a great review.

That's because it is heavy. Stop living in denial and just accept it.

As an object, the Lumia 920 does not weigh a lot. In relation to other phones, it weighs more than some, about the same as some, and less than some, but that doesn't really matter, because 2 or 3 ounces more or less doesn't matter.
