My nokia lumia windows phone will only work on speaker, can someone help me please?

I can answer my phone and make calls, but I can't hear the other person and they can't hear me unless MY phone is on speaker. What can the problem be?

Can you tell us what phone you have? Have you tried the most basic step, restarting the phone?
