Need to brainstorm you guys - Space trading game

I have a month between WP contracts so I thought I'd spend it writing a space trading game. Its coming along well but I'm at the point now where I have an auto generated galaxy with planets and resources but I problem that always gets me and that is what the 'pull' is that will make this game the most fun for the most players.

In a typical space trading game what is it that makes you want to play more? Is it :-

Discovery of new planets?
Desire to make more money?
Discovery of best trading routes?
Increasing your cargo hold to carry bigger / more goods?

something else?

I suspect its a bit of everything but any guidance will be appreciated.

For me its usually enemies. There has got to be a decent threat level - possibility of getting hit by pirates and losing good/money
 
Missions. Get $ reward for delivering cargo to destination before time limit type of thing.
