New Comments Threads as Forum Posts

There seems to be tons of comments in response to news stories- in many cases it seems like there is far more activity in the comments thread than the corresponding forum post. Comment threads that are long become hard to follow and navigate. Why not just have link to a forum thread at the end of a news story rather than have the comments section?

I know a lot of popular sites do that, and it seems like ones that have a lot of comment activity tend not to have forums (ie Engadget). Just thought I'd throw this out there!

I know there have been "From the Forums" articles on the news page in the past. I'm not sure if anything has been posted lately, though.
