New Icon tomorrow. Setup phone and install apps before DP or vice versa

The subject pretty much says it all. I have an icon coming tomorrow. Should I get everything set up on the phone, install apps etc. and then load the developers preview or go the other way and load the DP and then set up the phone, install apps etc.?

You might as well update it then do the apps. A bunch of them will update once you get 8.1 on there anyway.

If you've used the DP on another phone and have a backup to restore from that phone, you should install the DP updates before restoring.

If you restore before to the new backup before updating it won't restore things like Start Screen layout, backgrounds, and some other stuff.

Thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate it. This will be my first Windows phone and so nothing to restore to the new phone. Unfortunately it looks like the shipment took a wrong turn somewhere and probably won't be here until tomorrow.

1. Apply all the standard updates first!
2. Register for and apply all dev preview updates
3. Do a factory reset
4. Only now go on your app hunt.

I was just going to recommend the same thing. Updated the OS first, hard reset and then go app crazy on top of a fresh 8.1update install.
