No alert tone and no notifications when messages arrive. What to do to enable it

Purchased Lumia 550 on New Year Day. Neither Alert Tone Nor Notification sound or appear when new message arrive, Checked with the Settings and contacted the Microsoft Service Center. No way is found for the activation of this service. Could anyone come out with solutions.

Try going into the mail app itself. It seems to be a weird bug that happens when you A) update to the latest mail app software.
B) update the phone software.
What happens is that the app "defaults" back to the original settings. (Where notifications are unselected Signature defaults to sent from outlook as well)
The solution seems to be going into the mail app (cant remember if its accounts or settings) and checking "play notification sound".
