No Cortana for UK...Why is it collecting data from my phone?

We haven't got Cortana yet in the UK. But when I look at what is using data on my Lumia 635 (using Data Sense) I notice that there is a running app in the background, "Cortana:info gathering".
What's that about?

What your seeing is the blue print plans from bing were cortana gathers her info from . you can get cortana now ! go to store and download the app "preview for developers" from MS and use your MS account to sign in.

Thanks for that. I don't mind waiting for the full release, I just wondered why there was something Cortanaish going on in the background.

Also the data gathered helps improve Cortana for your region. Part of the development/improvement model would be my guess.

Sorry, I may be a bit more cynical. But I'd be more likely to guess that it's getting a head start in gathering marketting data.

Hang on... we do have Cortana in the UK. I got it last week on my 930 via the 8.1.1 release. Got live folders too...

That's interesting - since I'm still waiting for 8.1.1 as well.

Just saw this in this site;

Microsoft now rolling out Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 for Lumia 930

Windows Phones

Whereas other devices still seem to be waiting...
It all seems a bit muddled to me. If 8.1.1 and Cortana have been finalised for the UK, and allowed on one line of phones what's going on for the rest of us?

Seems the 930's in the UK are getting the update. I'm still waiting for the update for my 1520 on O2...

Odd. OK I'll ring them Monday. Strange that some have got the update and others haven't.

Sorry to disappoint but that is the way it works, MS release it for a phone, so looks like the 930 is first with the 735 and 830 carrying it from release, I would hope the 1520 is up at the top of the list, but then for some unknown reason each carrier then takes between a day and a lifetime to release it.

Still have no idea why we have to do the carrier delay bit.

But having been waiting many months it should now happen reasonably quickly.

Yes but my point is I have the 930, on the same network as FredBloggs007 who got his update last week.

Cortana should be available as an Alpha build in the UK. Not sure what the 'Cortana:info gathering' service is on about though

Hmmm - mine says Beta. Just to confirm, I haven't changed any international settings - I'm full UK/English etc.

Something I find odd is my phone doesn't even show Cyan. My original 930 did, which I only had for a few days and was replaced under warranty.

02061.00066.14353.31xxx is the number Nokia website shows as the Cyan update.
02061.00066.14252.51002 is the number shown on my phone.

Still no Cortana.

Hmmm - very strange. Are your phones locked to O2? I got my 930 on O2 from Carphone Warehouse and it's unlocked, so maybe that's why I got it?

I don't know if mine's locked or not, I got it directly from O2 and I don't have another nano sim to check. Probably locked as it has the O2 logo at startup.

My best guess is that they are releasing it in stages so everybody isn't trying to download it at the same time. Seems odd that CPW should get it before O2 though.

More likely to send it to unlocked phones before carriers though [CPW phones are unlocked]. Guess the carriers have a say in what is passed on to their customers??

Why i bought my 930 unlocked and with no contract
