My friend wanted to buy a new lumia 720 so we went to enquire about it in the nokia store.
They reported that its production has been completely stopped
Now, is that true ?
My friend is gonna cry a bucket if it is!!

No it is not. The nokia store might have run out of stock , try searching a different store/dealer shop to buy one. However one should wait since lumia 72X series will get a new lineup , a new mobile might be launched , if he could afford lumia 1320 , how should have a look at that one , it has 6 screen with 720p hd screen , though camera is very basic 5MP but it is OK one. Lumia 720 have 512MB ram which is considered to be low for games like temple run 2 , they are not yet compitable with 512MB devices. Lumia 1320 couples a faster processor with 1GB ram , meaning all apps will work including heavy graphic games without any problems. Also 1320 have 3rd tile support on start screen. Overall if one is comfortable with lumia 720 and it's camera he is good to go , but lumia 1320 is a future prof phone , making a mid budget phablet with killer specs for windows phone.

At this point I'd suggest to wait for the announcement for the 720's replacement. Its been almost a year that the 720 was announced. Its time for its successor now I think. I'm eagerly waiting an upgrade. No problem with the 720 though. Just that the 512 MB Ram can be limiting at times for ex while playing games.

Frankly I have not seen any lag so far when it comes to performance ( I dont play much games), apart from that the phone could do with a screen resolution and camera upgrades. :)

there are some lag while multitasking(resuming screen while switching to another applications )

I have a 720 and a 920. I'm probably spoiled by the 920's performance. Resuming apps, opening apps are faster in the 920. Nothing wrong like I said earlier with the 720. Just that with a GB of RAM it would be a sweet all rounder Windows smart phone. And a better camera. But I'm asking too much.
