My guess is, off the papers, Nokia is internally funding, Jolla so that they can improve / enhance their MeeGo based OS and gain as much market popularity as possible.

By time Nokia re-enters phone business, Sailfish OS will be matured and good enough, so Nokia will buy Jolla and use its OS, which is a good sign.

I made the same observation you did a few posts back and got slammed. Good to know I'm not alone.

There is little point in spending all the money that would need to be spent in order to even position Nokia to be able to design cutting edge smartphones, nevermind manufacturing them. They could barely stay afloat even with another company propping them up, no way they could stay afloat with their own product now.

Nokia's mobile business operation was too big as the sales were dropping. Starting something from the ground up would be much easier. I doubt it still that they would come back to phones, that business is gone. However I expect them to come back to something else.
