Please can anyone advise?
In regard to the above phone I recently upgraded it to Windows 10 mobile following instructions found on the internet (officially, I understand, Win 10 isn't available to this particular model)
I have launched store and gone to the menu and selected the item
"Downloads and Updates"
Then I press the "update" button but nothing happens. None of the apps that I have installed are working.
Please can anyone advise if there is a fix or workaround on this issue.
Thanks, Ian

Which wm10 build is your phone on after update? Did you perform a hard reset after update? You should hard reset after update without restoring from an old 8.1 backup (as it might cause a lot of problems) and install everything fresh. The first wm10 build (10586.107 if you used the offline update method) is also very buggy so you should update to the last 10586 build or Anniversary update (AU) 14393. Updating to AU you will loose glance after hard reset but it can be fixed. If you need Skype it no longer works on the 10586 builds.

Dear Sir
Thank you for your reply.
Please can you advise how I can find out which build my phone is on?

Sorry I have found out the build
The info is : Windows 10 Mobile
Version 1511 OS build 10.0.10586.107
Please can you advise where I can get a later build such as the later 10586 build you referred to .
Also from what you're saying Anniversary update (AU) 14393 would be best for me. Please can you advise where I can get AU from?
Also, when you say "I will loose glance" please can you kindly advise what this means?
Best wishes
Ian

I first updated my Lumia 925 to a better 10586 build by installing Mobile Enterprise edition. You need to transfer MobileEnterprise.ppkg file to your phone (the file can be found inside the win10 offline updater you already downloaded - TH2 builds) Instructions on how to do it and where you find this file is in the last section of this guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/windows-10-mobile/guide-win10-mobile-offline-update-t3527340 after update you should perform a hard reset (settings-system-about-reset phone without restoring from backup)

Updating to Anniversary update 14393 is trickier. I changed the registry settings for a lumia 830 using interop tools also from XDA forums. The black Glance screen that shows time and date date stops working but the missing glance files can be restored, instructions for this can also be found in XDA forums.

Dear Fin
Great news.
I have followed your instructions and managed to install the aforementioned version of Windows 10.
Checking on the version it now shows the following :

Service Provider CV GBIE
Software: Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise
Version 1511
OS Build 10.0.10586.1176
Firmware
Firmware Revision Number: 3051.50009.1451.1008

I ran the "Downloads and Updates" as soon as the installation was complete and happily about 40 apps were updated.
The only issue was that "Store" wouldn't (and still won't) update to "Microsoft Store". An error message was returned. I can still use store though.
Other that it seems to be absolutely fine.

I have since installed a few apps but need to install some more. Please can I ask: Would you recommend I do a back up?
Best wishes , Ian

Perfect sounds great. You have the latest (and last) TH2 build now. I recommend to hard reset your phone first, so you can install everything clean. Go to settings - system - about and choose reset phone. Mobile Enterprise will be removed after hard reset and everything will work better. The phone will stay on the same 10586.1176 build. After you have installed all your apps and all apps are updated and the phone settles down you can backup.

Dear Fin
Thank you.
I did a hard reset as advised and it still showed "Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise" as the Operating System, so I did another hard reset and "Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise" continues to be the listed operating system.
Please may I ask: does that mean I have done something wrong with the hard reset or is this to be expected?
Best wishes
Ian

Just checked my lumia 925 it also still shows Windows 10 mobile Enterprise even after update to AU, so I guess it isn't removed after hard reset after all. The phone works well so it shouldn't be a problem. If your phone restarted and the cogwheels started spinning the reset was successful.

Dear Fin
Thank you for your kind confirmation.
I guess I am good to go then.
I will install apps and then do a back up.
By the way - can I ask please: Do you see a difference in performance between Windows Mobile Enterprise and Windows mobile AU?
Best wishes
Ian

I haven't noticed any difference in performance between TH2 (Threshold2 the wm10 branch you have installed now) and AU. Skype still works on AU which was the main reason I updated and I have still received monthly updates on patch tuesday from Microsoft. What made a difference in performance was when I increased virtual memory to 1gb by tweaking the registry settings.

Dear Fin
That sounds like something I would be interested in.
I have the 925.4 model with 1gb of RAM and 32gb internal storage.
Please may ask whether you feel this could be beneficial for me and if so what instructions I would need to follow to do this
Best wishes, Ian

To modify the registry settings you need to install the right version of Interop Tools (1.9.390.0) for TH2 builds, don´t install the version from store, it will not work on your build. Be very careful, if you modify the wrong values in the registry your device might become unusable ("bricked")! When I did this I had my Lumia 925 as my backup phone.
1. On your PC, Download the right version of Interop Tools from https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70175971&postcount=513. You just need Dependencies_ARM.zip and
InteropTools_RC-1.9-pre10_arm_1.9.390.0.zip the other ones are for pc and will not work on the phone. Put all the APPXs (including dependencies) on your phone storage (e.g. Download folder)
2. On your phone. go to Settings > Update & security > For developers
3. Turn on Developer mode, Device Discovery and Device Portal
4. Open Microsoft Edge on the phone, and go to http://127.0.0.1/ to open Device Portal (it is possible to do this using your PC via WiFi but it'll be slower since the APPXs need to be transfered via WiFi)
5. If there is a certificate error, ignore it and click Continue to this webpage
6. You might be asked to authenticate. Go to the previous developer settings and click Pair button
7. On the Device Portal, Click Apps on the left sidebar
8. Install all Interop Tools dependencies ONE BY ONE. After that, install the main Interop Tools APPX
9. Turn off Device Discovery and Device Portal on the developer settings
10. Open Interop Tools > This Device. Open sidebar, choose Interop Unlock
12. Check Restore NDTKSvc and restart your device (on some occasions, the other option can't be turned on until you restart your device)
13. Open Interop Tools again - click on This device - Open registry browser and navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PagingFiles
14. Change the values 256 256 to 1024 1024 (remember the spacing in between the numbers) and save
15 . Restart your phone

Check Settings - System - Storage - This Device - System&Reserved. If the change was successful virtual memory should now read 1,00 GB instead of 256 MB.

I have the lumia 925 with 1GB RAM and 16 gb internal storage. Multitasking will be faster when you want to switch from one open app to another and you can have more apps open at the same time after increasing the virtual memory. From what I've read some memory intensive apps might work better.

Interop Tools can also be used to modify your phone model name to enable you to download Anniversary Update should you wish to do so later.

Dear Fin
Thanks to your clear instructions that you kindly took the trouble to provide, I was able to successfully increase the virtual memory to 1gb
I have a couple of questions please:
(1) Should I leave it in Developer Mode or change it back to a different setting (if so I can't remember what it was previously!
(2) I have two Lumia 735's as well which I purchased at an auction a couple of weeks ago along with the 925. Please can you advise if the instructions above can also be used on the 735's ?
(3) Would there be any benefits / disadvantages to upgrading to AU
Best wishes , Ian
Ian

Glad to hear you succeeded in increasing the virtual memory.

(1) You can switch back to Windows-Store-apps (first option which is the default one). You will not be able to use Interop Tools when the phone isn´t set to developer mode, but you can switch back when you need to use it

(2) I don´t have the Lumia 735 myself but if you haven´t updated them from 8.1 you should be able to do so using the upgrade advisor app (if it still works) since that model is supported officially by Microsoft for wm10 Anniversary Update. Here´s a chart showing phones that are supported for wm10 officially Windows 10 Mobile - January 2018 status for all compatible phones
If the upgrade advisor app doesn´t work you can use the same offline update method you used for Lumia 925 (but ofc selecting the apropriate files for Lumia 735 instead). Once updated to 10586.107 just search for updates and the 735s should update to latest AU build (atm 14393.2431). Once updated to that build hard reset and after that you can also increase the virtual memory on the Lumia 735 phones, but you might get low on internal memory since they only seem to have 8gb. In case you want to do this you need another version of Interop-Tools for AU - version 1.9.437.0 that can be downloaded here : https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71000190&postcount=607

(3) Benefits of updating the Lumia 925 to AU would be that you get monthly updates from Microsoft the second tuesday evening in the month with bugfixes and security updates (not sure how long but I got last update in august so will see if I get another next week - the newer x50 phones are updated longer till the end of 2019). Apps are also updated better in AU. Some apps like Skype will not work if you don´t have at least AU, but even after update videocalls on Skype are a bit laggy at times compered to my Lumia 950XL. The main disadvantage of updating is that the Glance-screen stops working but it can be fixed. You can update Lumia 925 to more recent builds like Creators Update or Fall Creators Update but then rendering of streets in maps app and Bluetooth could stop working so I don`t recommend that. I would recommend you to try updating a Lumia 735 first so you can see the difference.

If you like wm10 the best experience would be with the newer x50 phones like Lumia 650 (not quite as smooth as the high end phones but works very well imo), Lumia 950, Lumia 950XL, Alcatel Idol 4s or hp elite x 3 they all work fine on the latest fall creators update.

Dear Fin
Thank you for your kind reply with the helfpul information and links.
I'll switch the 925 back to Windows-Store-Apps for now.
To be honest I am not a Skype user, so in regard to might make it worthwhile updating to AU in a little while.
In regard to the 735's I think I have them on AU already. But the Virtual Memory is I think still set at 256mb. In view of Internal memory being only 8gb on that model perhaps I could increase Virtual Memory to maybe 512mb or 768mb? Or maybe intall a micro SD card and configure it to have my apps installed to the the card?
I can download the version of Interops you've provided along with developer arm as before and go for it again. I guess some of the menu's in Settings may be slightly different though?
Thank you for the information about the more recent models, which I am going to bear in mind. I obtained my phones from a computer auction place nearby to where I live - they seem to have a lot available at present and they weren't expensive. I did see a 650 model yesterday but let it go because I didn't know it was a more recent version. There were also a lot of 640 dual sim models available.
I find the 735 good in regard to clarity of speech when on the phone. This is helpful to me as I have a moderate hearing impairment. I read somewhere the technology of the audio in this model is very good I came across a Wikipedia article in which that model was referred to but I have lost the article for now.
With kind regards, Ian

Sounds like an excellent plan to move everything you can on the 735 to an SDcard so you can see how much virtual memory you can spare. I agree that clarity of speech is very important. I tend to turn up the volume to the highest possible setting to be able to hear everything clearly.

Good luck with your Lumias.

Dear Fin
I will look into that option to move it to an SD card.
The 735 is , I find ,very high quality in the area of incoming speech quality which I find very helpful. In regard to when I put it to speaker during a phone call, the quality is not quite so good though especially with the volume turned up (a little distortion). Still I am very pleased with that phone overall.
In regard to the 925: I would like to say thank you for all the advice you have provided for me. That one is a lovely phone to have also now.
The only (minor) issue with the 925 I guess and it is minor to say the least; is that "Windows Store" didn't update to "Microsoft Store" unlike with the 735's.
When I went to "downloads and updates" in the Store menu, the download of the update for this app started but then returned an error message and it wasn't updated. As far as I can see the only difference between "Store" and "Microsoft Store" seems to be the icon.
Best wishes, Ian
