Notifications?

I am coming from Android and although I love so much about this phone and the beauty of the operating system, I am having a major problem that I am hoping some one has a great suggestion for. I have to have my phone on silent while at work. Today was my first day with it on silent and aside from the problem some are having with their vibrate I am having the exact opposite problem. It is really almost non existent. There is also no notification light or bar. My last phone on android also didn't have a light so I downloaded an app called no led. I can't stare at my phone all day and don't want to be hitting the button to open and check lock screen. How do others handle this?
