Office Online, offline

It appears on a Chromebook that Google apps has full offline capability and will just sync when you get Internet reconnected.
How does the free Office Online work in this scenario? Can you still modify documents offline in the web browser?

Office Online needs to be well, Online! (Google did a bunch of work to make their things work offline)
It'll probably complain about there being no connection.

You'll be better off with actual offline Office, although I realize it may not be a practical option for you.
