I just read this on Google+ and thought I would share. It is copied from from Google Nexus Line's post today.

A few separate sources today are confirming what we heard from the WSJ earlier this year - that Google's Nexus phone program is about to be completely overhauled, and perhaps that is the reason we haven't heard the usual rumors about the new Nexus phone reaching a crescendo level at this time of the year.

The sources point out that Google will be setting up a whole new Nexus program now, in which any major manufacturer can participate with the best they can offer, but will have to adhere to strict guidelines.

The major news here is that all the stock Android Nexuses, regardless of the manufacturer, will have their UI overlays that supposedly differentiate the brands, as just a theme available via a separate customization center. It was high time, if you ask us, and something millions of Android users have been demanding for a while now.

Moving on, we find the info that those new Nexus phones will be running an upgrade from Jelly Bean, numbered 4.2, and will have to include some hardware requirements that will get in use for a major Android 5.0 release, which is slated for next fall. Android 4.2, which may or may not be called Key Lime Pie, will bring minor changes to Jelly Bean, like presenting the homescreens as tabs, improved power management, integrated Play Store app, and some under the hood Nexus-y stuff that will be the basis for the next major Android release.

Perhaps the biggest change will be the Customization Center we mentioned above, a native theme manager, which will allow you switching to the manufacturer UI overlay, if you are so inclined.

As to who will make those Nexus phones with the new concept - the LG Optimus G Nexus got confirmed for the umpteenth time, but also the Samsung Galaxy Nexus 2 is bandied about, as well as phones from Sony and HTC are claimed as potential partners, and the whole lot is said to hit shelves in November, just in time to rain on the Windows Phone 8 Lumia, ATIV and HTC parade.

Let's not forget that November 5 is Android's fifth birthday since the announcement, so celebrating with a new Nexus program seems fitting. Andy Rubin is expected to talk about the new Nexus program at the AllThingsD: conference later this month, but the actual phones that participate are said to be unveiled in November.

Basically, the take is that we might have the lead phones of some Android manufacturers this holiday season sold with stock Android, and a theme manager to install the manufacturer interface as a personal choice, which can be reverted. Makes great sense, since everyone can choose their favorite design/hardware combo, and be sure that as soon as a newer Android version gets released, they will be first in line, with the manufacturer overlays out of the way.

Microsoft, which Nokia yesterday said is unlikely to make a better WP8 device than the Finns, if it eventually goes the Surface Phone way, is rumored to take an entirely opposite approach, and has allegedly already booked Pegatron for production of the Surface Phone, which might be coming by next summer.

I know it's a long read, but the question it poses is this: How badly will this hurt the WP8 release? The nexus device is Android's flagship and a very big deal, and seeing that there will be several of them from different manufacturers, released in november with updated JB to boot, this can be a pretty hard hit for Microsoft.

I'm still snagging a Nokia, but I could easily see quite a few people who were going to switch change their minds pretty quick after this news is out. What are your thoughts on this?

Why would this affect WP any more or less than the gazillion android devices already available, with octo cores and fission reactors? And in effect, all WP devices are nexus's cos they are not skinned and any carrier crap can be removed. So why would these devices be any different?

This is the android equivalent of a new iPhone on Apple. Android devices drop every week from just about every manufacturer, but the nexus device is different. It is unlockable, it gets the newest android updates before any other device (unless it's on Verizon or Sprint, but that's a whole different discussion) and it usually has the newest features android has to offer. This time the buyer gets to choose their nexus device from several OEM's. People who were looking to switch, may not now. As a long time android user, I can tell you this is big news.

But it's a nexus with Android. So it will be both ugly in hardware and software.

Wasnt there an issue with the Verizon nexus not getting or not having google wallet or some other issue? In any case, this can be countered by the MS offer of getting updates direct from them that they mentioned. Techies yes, but I dont see the average consumer suddenly stopping in their tracks from getting any phone just because of this.

Yes, Verizon still refuses to allow Google wallet, it's easy enough to sideload though. Verizon seriously screwed up with the current nexus.

Big deal for geeks, not sure about normal people.

If anything plays even more into samsungs hands, who will still produce the cheapest high spec phone.

Android should probably try focusing on WHY THE DAMN THING STUTTERS ON a DUAL/QUAD CORE...

Seriously? A visual over-haul? Theme chooser? It's anything but mature of Google to focus on such petty things that are so well done by plenty of other devs out there.

What it needs to focus on is security, speed, reliability, hardware-software optimization and plenty of other little things.

What MS has done is, it has focused on BOTH simultaneously.

The more I read about Android now a days, the more I hate my phone.

I would say normal people who are just looking for a phone that works will like the Nokia line as well as the new HTC offerings because of the color choice (not sure why more manufacturers don't do this) and the accessories. As for techies, yes they may be swayed, but it would be nice having them on the WP side writing apps. It all comes down to marketing as well. I am interested to see how this plays out.

Yep, this is a pretty big deal for me. Kinda strange that I heard about it on WPCentral first, but I'm very excited now. :D
