Palworld is the best and only credible alternative to Pokémon, and it's about to get a huge, important update.

I just want to say that first line is scandalous and makes me so very sad. My favorite game in this genre right now is Cassette Beasts. It is absolutely fantastic and for long time Pokémon fans will certainly scratch that itch for an early gen game more than Palworld. Tem Tem is also great and is Monster Tamer (both Cassette Beasts and Monster Tamer are Xbox Play Anywhere too and on cloud; monster Tamer even has touch controls). Then there's the Digimon Story games which are FANTASTIC (so glad Xbox is finally getting the franchise with the latest upcoming game).

Not a knock on Palworld or this update. I'm enjoying playing that too and I've mostly played on Steam so far (back when it got updates faster than Xbox) so cross play will be dope. But honestly it scratches the turn based monster catcher itch the least for me. I feel it's more akin to Digimon World than a traditional Pokémon game, so calling it the best and only credible Pokémon alternative, well that just hurts because there's so many other amazing games from indies that have been inspired by the old school Pokémon and other games from that early monster catcher time.

Palworld culturally has been so interesting. It blew up mostly in a meme way (Pokémon with guns), but has made a name for itself... and that's attracted the ire of Nintendo who doesn't want competition in this space and is now trying to patent some very basic game mechanics in this genre and that have even shown up in other types of games. I guess it's good the other games haven't caught the heat from Nintendo (though they'd all be affected if the patents go through), but still rather sad they also just haven't seen the success or popularity of Palworld. Like I can't express enough how good Cassette Beasts is. It's just so much fun and takes me back to playing Pokémon Red on my cousin's Gameboy.
