PC USB charging

I charge my Lumia 920 connecting it to my ultrabook. I know it's quite slow, but was wondering if it somehow affect battery life and performance?

Actually, slow charging is good for the battery. As it will improve the battery's life.

I find that attempting to charge via usb on the pc makes my phone extremely hot,

Oh.. How can it be? Because in USB 2.0 port, the maximum allowed current is at 500 mA. Which shouldn't cause the phone to heat up.

Yep, but it still gets hot, I've no idea why,.,,

USB 2.0 ports on some computers can output more than 500 mA.
