Phantom data usage poll--AT&T

I am not saying they are scamming people but there seems to be something off about them.

When I was with Sprint I never went above 1GB, actually most of the time not even close to 1GB.

When I switched to AT&T I would regularly go over 2GB although I never went over my 3GB limit. At the time I just chalked it up to the excitement of having a new L920 and over using it.

However recently I switched to AIO, my first month is up, I am using the same L920 and I am back to way below 1GB usage for my first month.

:straight:

Got to admit I have had trouble with AT&T myself in the WiFi area. Got a email from them saying I was over my 10 gig limit.went to the AT&T customer web site and it says I have used only 7.1gigs. Took the battery out of my mobile WiFi device and let it sit for two days. Got another email saying I was up another gig. Went to the web site and it says I am still at 7.1' And we are suppose to trust AT&T. Maybe one day but NOT today.

This phantom data usage is NOT user error. I had an L900 and never saw even close to 1 gig of usage. Since getting the L920 I am always close to 1.5 GB. I also switch and use a L820 and still same result. Even if I turn off data and run on WiFi only, I see data usage at 2a. According to ATT my WiFi is going down, but if data is turned off on the phone then why is the phone using it. They have no answer. Just counting until my contract expires and then they will loose a reliable paying customer since 1997!!

This is why im still gathering information and getting an attorney, as stated I've been to att and have sent my emails and screen shots and still being told its not them and no explanation as to why my data has tripled in 6 months and no explanation as why there system reports conflicting emails as to data used. I got 6 emails in 4 hours one night going from 1gig over warning to 6gigs over, in 4 freaking hours!!!!!

Dont forget they've been sued over this before

It was a class action lawsuit, from what I've read they blamed it on the iPhones os but got busted on false reported data, they would round it up so 950 Mb would be reported as 1gig, they were made to pay everyone part of the suit like 900 bucks. I'm gathering up my last year of itemized bills and a few of my friends are doing the same and screenshots of there apps data use over 30 days. Now with data sense on 8.1 i can directly compare my usage time to there's and data used between them.

All of a sudden my data sense app started draining on my Lumia 1520. Cool thing about wp8.1 is it shows exactly which setup is using data. It was dating that my Google email had used 500mb over the past few days. I have a second google email account and it only had used 11mb. That is crazy what is going on there?

I totally believe you! I tested my speed and it should take 7 hours to download a GB . So something is fishy with my data usage either the speed test is throttled down or data is over reported. For me it doesn't matter because I have unlimited access but how do you explain how I'm using 40GB a month on a phone

Late to the party here, but I've just started experiencing this after 24 months on an HTC Android and then another 17 months on a Lumia 920 WP8 with AT&T with no issues. Until June, was using only 20-30MB monthly on a 200MB plan.

Suddenly, in mid-June there was a burst of data posted to my account during the wee hours on two days. Shot me over the 200MB cap so they happily and automatically sold me another 200MB for the four days remaining in my billing cycle. Rep could not give me any information about the nature of the transmission or anything else other than a pitch to upgrade my plan.

I watched carefully every day in late June and early July and saw the typical limited usage. Then, yesterday between noon and 5pm I got 5 usage entries between 20-40mb each on my account totaling 130MB. I was sitting at my office desk or in meetings, connected to company WiFi, and not picking up the phone once during that period. This forced me to finally research how to turn off data on the cellular channel which I have done now. I would call AT&T again to ask about this, but suspect all I will get is the shoulder-shrug and sales pitch again.

My hope is that, with data on cellular now turned off, some errant process will start complaining when I am out of reach of WiFi. Thanks for starting this poll, and I'll be watching it with interest in case there is some great revelation. AT&T hasn't pushed 8.1 to me yet so I eagerly await DataSense.

Carrier
Usage (even if its not much 1-2 gigs)

I have it and im on AT&T, data was turned off for 24 hours yet still should I used 1 gig during that time. AT&T is of no help and claims its my phone, impossible as this is my 2nd 1520 and the issue remains.

I have been going through the same issue with phantom data usage. When I first signed with att I had 2 lines for my fianc? and myself. We used no more than 8 gb. Now I'm all the way up 23gb a month. Funny thing is we use our phone's even less. My fianc? is always home on wifi with mobile data off. I'm working and when I'm at work my phone is shut off. I come home and use wifi. I might use data 2 hrs a day on little things. There is now way we use this much, especially when my 4g is only only running about 1mbps, which I complained. Every time I upgraded data it kept going over. Went from 6 gb to 10 gb to 15 gb to 20 gb to finally 30 gb. Every time I upgraded data I would go over about 2 to 3 gbs over forcing me to upgrade again. It's a total scam! They tried to blame it on Netflix at first until I told them I only watch 2 movie's a month on my data.

I am interested in knowing where the people live who are experiencing this "overage" problem. My son is getting dinged regularly (often the day before the billing cycle is up), often in the morning when he turns his phone back on etc etc . . . his usage has not changed - he used to be able to keep his data below one of the lower contract amounts - now, we are being smacked with overage 3,4,5 times a month. Our wi-fi is no spottier than it was before - he actually used to watch movies on his phone. We have been asked to reset the phone to factory specs - told he MUST be using it more than he is admitting to me . . . lots of other insulting comments . . .I would say this started about a year ago and has gotten increasingly worse. To me, the real kicker is when he turns the phone off all night and in the morning there is an overage . . .the latest explanation from ATT is that the notices are delayed - not in real time . .just like what everyone else is being told. So, we are in rural Vermont. His phone is a Samsung 4. Has anyone gotten anywhere with the "lawsuit angle" - is there anyway we could get a class action suit going? Sprint and Tmobile don't have coverage here good enough to switch - our only other option is Verizon which we are seriously considering for him. - paying the termination fee to ATT just to get the stress out of our lives - I have an old unlimited ATT data contract which I will never give up - even if it's just to get back at them.
