So in the last few days, some users have said that MS is making a mistake by not releasing low-end phones together with the upcoming flagships. Others say that we already have too many low-end phones and that it's best to focus on high-end for now.

Then WC posted this article: Microsoft Lumia 550 'Saimaa' Windows Phone with front-facing flash set to displace Lumia 640 | Windows Central

Announcing the upcoming lumia 550 and that it's coming to replace the beloved 640.

Are you planning to ditch your current phone for this new low-end phone?

It may be faster and definitely newer and more compatible with Windows 10 mobile, but I'll keep my more senior L1020 until either a rightful successor comes out or until it gives up.

Hahah if my memory is what it used to be, then you already revived it once :p

I really like my 640 right now. I'll see when it comes out, because the idea of a front camera with flash is pretty nice. It's going to be either this or the midrange to come.

I might upgrade from my 435 to this. The 500 and 600 series are merging together it seems (not even a whisper on 4Chan about a 650, or it's a cancelled project in actuality), so it's interesting to see what they come up with launching a 550. I expect lots of features for at least 75$.

With that update now, I probably wouldn't get one anymore. It sounds like a decent device but I wanted something smaller than 5", since my current Lumia is 5".

Honestly I don't see how this can replace the lumia 640. This seems like a replacement for the 530/535 line.

Although, how can the Lumia 640 already have a successor. It isn't even six months old is it?

Maybe I am missing something; but how do they expect the 550 to displace the 640. Is the 210 better than the 400, is the 5mp camera better than a 8mp, is the 4.7" screen better than the 5" screen. A front flash does not do much for me, can't remember the last time I took a selfie. If this is really the replacement for the 640 I really must have missed the boat. I have a 640 and a backup 820 (plus a Moto G lte). The 950 and 950XL is to expensive to risk W10 not making it. Looks like I will stand pat for now until we see what happens with W10 on smartphones.

Make no sense to replace the 640 it just came out not even a year. They can leave the 640 and sell the 550 as well makes no sense at all

Lumia 550 will be somehow a replacement of 640 and 6xx is going to be a league above

The 640 will most likely be available but not from carriers (imo), but yea I wouldn't take the 640 out just yet

I was thinking about selling my 920 and 635 to help me raise funds for the 950 :p but I'll stick to the band 2.0 for this year, unless I see sth amazing on Tuesday

going off topic...

The 640's must have been an unplanned stopgap to try and calm the masses until MS pulled a plan together.

Looks like if just 2 line numbers happen annually if MS Mobile survives it might be in the 50's:
550
650
???
???
950
????

Who knows...
I'm just guessing.

I'd buy a 550 for the wife if it was a 5 inch phone.

true the x50's seem to be a new direction for MS, maybe they want to use it so we can differentiate the devices that have more MS elements from those that came from the Nokia deal?

I might buy the 550 because I want a phone that's sized comfortably for me. 4.5-5.0 inches. The 950 is a little too big for my taste. I just wish there would be an upper mid range phone that size with a better screen resolution and better processor. How about a 950 mini 4.5 inch? Or a Lumia 750? I guess I'll either get the 550 or continue with my 535? I'll see how it looks next week!
