Possible to re-enable full-image download upon zoom?

Not sure when this feature went away, but when searching for images it starts out with a low-res thumbnail, and when you zoom in it used to download the higher-res image. Now it doesn't seem to be doing this.

Is this a setting on my phone that's changed? I can't find anyway to re-enable it.

When that happens to me, it always means my data is slow and I can verify this in any other app that uses a lot of data. Sometimes it takes a while for the preview to be replaced by the hi-res version, which usually means the data is slower, but not slow enough that you don't even get it.
