Problems with sound card (realtek) following May Windows 10 security update?

Has anyone else been experiencing errors with their Realtek sound card following the latest security update? Oddly, my software (Skype, Mp3 Skype recorder, Audacity) does not let me use the mic input for this card, saying it is not detected (e.g., Skype will play the audio for the test call, but nothing is registered when a voice response is made at the recording prompt).

YET I can play audio just fine, and in the control panel the settings indicate nothing has changed since before the upgrade. What gives? Is this a widespread error, and what does it mean when only input rather than both input and speakers seem to be kaputt? BTW, the same error comes up when I try to attach an external mic USB input. Any advice would be appreciated.
