My son is currently on Verizon with his 8x. I will soon be moving him to ATT. I know the limitations of his phone on ATT, but it will be fine for a while. My question is this...

Once he is using Sim from ATT, will his phone be able to get the next update? Or does the phone HAVE to be on Verizon system to receive the update?

Thanks!

Not sure if it helps much, but I run a Verizon device on another network and I got the latest update. I think its not really depending on the current network you are using, it's up to Verizon if they push out updates for the device.

Hope that somehow answers your question : )

But if Verizon pushes it out, and the phone is on the ATT network, how will the Verizon push reach the phone?

I know my S3 didn't get the latest update until I put a Verizon Sim in it. It had been deactivated and had no Sim in it.

Odd. On my spare Lumia 928 from Verizon I still received it, including the Black update while running on KPN (in the Netherlands). I don't think updates are really provider-sim-related. I received it with my sim in it, though. Updated through wifi.

I'm sorry that I can't give you a solid answer.

I don't believe that updates are from the carrier servers. They are only based on the phone branding. So when the phone checks the update server, it looks for an update based on the existing firmware and branding.

100% correct, and to add if it were possible (not at the moment) to flash the Verizon 8X with another variant ROM (could be carrier or country specific) then the update would solely depend on when HTC/carrier would push out the update for that ROM irrespective of what service is it being used on, in this case its Verizon.

Developer OS Update preview program. Free to all. Get your OS updates when MS makes them available instead of when the carriers do.
