Question regarding apple specified headphones with mic

Is it possible per say you have a headphone that has a MIC and controls that work for apple but replace the cable with ones that work with windows phone like the purity cable? Or is the tech inside the headphones themselves?

In other words if a cable is detachable can I replace it with one that works with windows phones so I can have full mic volume control's and such?
