If the market for Windows 8 does not explode in the next year or so, then MS may have no choice but to move to something like this as "plan B". They have to respond to what the consumer wants. Windows 8 is designed to be adabtable to the new mobile world, and if you can't get it into the buyers hands then a huge portion of what you are trying to build is wasted.

I am sure MS wants to keep it's pre-Windows 8 business model alive if at all profitable. This has the "bare bones" feel of a nice direction turn if they can't make that happen.
