Sharing files among users – overwriting open files

My users is accessing the same shared folders with the use of Onedrive client.
If excel document 1 is used (open) on user 1, user2 can open the same document at the same time and and overwrite user 1 changes.

This is critical – a whole workday can be lost this way.
If using VPN and Windows file sharing, excel keeps track of open files.

What to do?

This might be somewhat of a necro, but I have the same issue. I use a VPN all the time and it makes OneDrive overwrite all my newer files with older versions of them. I lost dozens of hours of work this way. I disabled auto-syncing now to prevent this from happening.
