Should I buy L1020?

I'm looking to upgrade from my 520 to 1020. Consider this: I'm a photography enthusiast but I don't want to spend a fortune(In India, it's available for 19k Rs/ 270 USD on Amazon) and I'm worried about having to buy an old model (which 1020 pretty much is). I don't want to be having to buy another phone just because my 1020 wouldn't do anything apart from great shooting.
So please suggest should I get a 1020 or look further?
And oh, I don't want anything costing more than 270USD.
Any help is appreciated.

270 USD is way too much for the 1020 in my opinion. I would look at Android options while picking up a 925 or 920 for the camera.

Also, look to see if you can get at least an 830 or 930.

I wouldn't bother unless you like to take great pics with a slow camera.

If there's any other option for you that has the 4 core processor such as an unlocked Lumia 830, Lumia 735 or 640XL that's what I'd purchase.

In phone years, the 1020 is ancient. The price you are thinking about paying would have been a decent price a couple of years ago, but it's way too much, now. For $20 more, you can buy a brand new 950. Add $100, and you can get a very good 950XL. Both of those phones have superb cameras, with the bonus of having much newer specs. Any of the phones listed above by other forum members, including a huge array of Android phones, are much better options than the 1020.

Absolutely, $270 would get me a newer, higher-midrange phone that would blow the 1020 away in literally every regard except raw photo quality. It's just not worth it to almost anyone. Something closer to $120 is more like it.

The 1020 doesn't have any problems, its just that the phone is about three years old, has no future software updates in the pipeline and no longer has anything going for it other than a camera that headlined three years ago. The MP count hasn't been seriously matched, but I believe besides that the phone has since been outclassed to a degree. (although I'm sure my 920 would hold up okay today)

Exactly. I'd go with the 950 or even 930 if its around $190 over the 1020. They don't have the raw MP count but they're better in basically every quantifiable way. They also got a future with Windows 10 Mobile.

It's bigger and a fine phone.

Camera-wise, it stacks up well against Android competitors in its price and age class. But its still an inexpensive phone and won't blow away an iPhone 6 for example.

To clarify, I can make do with 520 even now, but am looking to upgrade with a better cam and spec

It's better than Lumia 520 and L1020 works like a charm with windows phone 8.1 (denim). Apps Here Maps and Here Drive are available for this phone.

Nowadays technology changes in bounds and leaps, there is no doubt lumia 1020 is a great device but Nokia N95 was too and made had a great camera. Now you cant expect me to buy a nokia N95 today, or lets say 2 years back just because it had a great camera. Not only is it hard to find in the market but also there is no one who can provide me servicing if i require. The same goes in your case, lumia 1020 was a great device, but you should always look ahead to what is and will be to offer in the market. Also you will be paying way over the price it is actually worth. You can use it as an standalone camera, but i would not suggest to make it a daily driver.

At the end of the day its your decision to yay or nay. Good luck.

I picked up my L930 for ?80ish off ebay and the condition was extremely good.

So the OP should be able to pick up a L930 for waaaay less than $190 dollars.

Very good point!
I was lucky with the used 1020 I bought as far as battery time.
Another thing to watch for on the 1020 being an ancient model is the camera module focus mechanism.
Mine was sluggish and drove me crazy.
A member here stated that a fix was to hold the phone face down and shake it.
I'll be darned that worked...until it started doing it again.
I almost bought a new module from eBay to try and fix the camera.
Ended up selling the phone for about what I paid for it.
