i'm looking at getting a surface pro but i don't know which one to get. should i get the surface pro 4?
the two main things for are processing power and storage.

What do you plan on using it for? That's the question that you need to ask. Media consumption can be done with a lower spec machine, maybe m3 or i5 processor
if it is a little of office apps, editing, typing etc, than again the i5 can handle it. If it is more of coding, media editing, complex program use like matlab, then i5 could be the lower limit and 8GB RAM is also the minimum

Now the surface pro 4 is good for a mixture of media consumption and editing, working etc. If it is media consumption alone, then the surface 3 can do the same job
Remember, the surface devices are very portable but kind of expensive.

Chintan pretty much covered it with his reply. Although I would like to point out office apps, multi-tabbed browsing, games like Halo Spartan Strike, Asphalt 8, etc and even using design software (to a degree) can all be handled by the Core m3.
