From the recent threads I've read, I was in the same boat as many users. I'm content with my 1020 waiting for a new flagship, but am a little bored and itching for something new. I decided I'd pick up a used 1520 to bridge the gap until the new phones eventually emerge. I was able to justify this in my mind by declaring I could continue to use the 1520 as a small tablet after I buy a new phone.
I was aware of possible phantom touch issues, and decided to buy a refurbished phone from eBay from a reputable reseller. I paid $299 for a 16gb ATT model. I actually purchased my 1020 from the same company and have never had a single issue with it, so I felt comfortable about my decision.
Almost immediately, the display would freak out, jumping up and down repeatedly. The touch screen would not register during those times, nor would the capacitive buttons. A quick press off and on would return the phone to a useable state. I assumed this was the phantom touch issue, but before I returned it, I decided to read this forum and try some settings changes. I had already spent a few hours performing all the updates and configuring it, so I would much prefer a fix than an exchange.
After changing:
- touch sensitivity to normal
- double tap to wake to off
- all ease of access settings to off
everything dramatically improved. However, I occasionally still have the issue. This changed from a problem virtually every usage to maybe once or twice a day. Since the settings changes, the worst thing that happened was while capturing a sample video, the image started randomly zooming in and out with me having to ability to stop it. That is pretty bad, but that only happened once.
Other than that, the phone is a fantastic upgrade from the 1020. I love how much more information is on the gorgeous display and how snappy it is. I do think it looks ridiculously large when holding it up to my ear! But, now when I use my 1020, it feels like I'm holding a Lego.
The phone has a 30 day warranty, so I decided maybe it is best to exchange it, so I started the process on eBay. This is where the story gets ugly. The seller never responded. I asked eBay to step in, and they did. I can return the item and wait a week for my money to be refunded. Then I can start over.
Based on people's experiences with this phone, am I better off just keeping what I have knowing I have an occasional intermittent issue? Should I go through the pain of returning, waiting, finding, and reconfiguring and possibly having an even less reliable 1520? Or, should I just return it and keep my 1020 until I buy a new phone later this year?
