Should I keep this 1520?

From the recent threads I've read, I was in the same boat as many users. I'm content with my 1020 waiting for a new flagship, but am a little bored and itching for something new. I decided I'd pick up a used 1520 to bridge the gap until the new phones eventually emerge. I was able to justify this in my mind by declaring I could continue to use the 1520 as a small tablet after I buy a new phone.

I was aware of possible phantom touch issues, and decided to buy a refurbished phone from eBay from a reputable reseller. I paid $299 for a 16gb ATT model. I actually purchased my 1020 from the same company and have never had a single issue with it, so I felt comfortable about my decision.

Almost immediately, the display would freak out, jumping up and down repeatedly. The touch screen would not register during those times, nor would the capacitive buttons. A quick press off and on would return the phone to a useable state. I assumed this was the phantom touch issue, but before I returned it, I decided to read this forum and try some settings changes. I had already spent a few hours performing all the updates and configuring it, so I would much prefer a fix than an exchange.

After changing:
- touch sensitivity to normal
- double tap to wake to off
- all ease of access settings to off

everything dramatically improved. However, I occasionally still have the issue. This changed from a problem virtually every usage to maybe once or twice a day. Since the settings changes, the worst thing that happened was while capturing a sample video, the image started randomly zooming in and out with me having to ability to stop it. That is pretty bad, but that only happened once.

Other than that, the phone is a fantastic upgrade from the 1020. I love how much more information is on the gorgeous display and how snappy it is. I do think it looks ridiculously large when holding it up to my ear! But, now when I use my 1020, it feels like I'm holding a Lego.

The phone has a 30 day warranty, so I decided maybe it is best to exchange it, so I started the process on eBay. This is where the story gets ugly. The seller never responded. I asked eBay to step in, and they did. I can return the item and wait a week for my money to be refunded. Then I can start over.

Based on people's experiences with this phone, am I better off just keeping what I have knowing I have an occasional intermittent issue? Should I go through the pain of returning, waiting, finding, and reconfiguring and possibly having an even less reliable 1520? Or, should I just return it and keep my 1020 until I buy a new phone later this year?

What if, in a month, the issue becomes so bad that the phone is unusable?
If you already have issues presenting themselves, I worry that they will get worse after a few months of ownership and make your phone completely useless.

I too bought a 1520 off eBay, and mine had a host of problems, luckily it was still under factory warranty. You might want to check with the Nokia repair website and see if you have warranty coverage

Hi,

I have the phone since it was launched and i never had this problem till 2 or 3 month ago!!
No answer for you question, just to send you my feedback with the exact same problem.
When the phone is on a table completly horizontally the touch works perfectly and when i hold it again the problems starts. My opinion is that there is some pressure at the bottom near the "find" button 'cause the most common issue is that it goes automatically to the "listening..." page, so for you to go there manually you have to click it for a second. And try something, when that happens again give it a strong firm 2 fingers "touch" on that region and the problem stops.
If i could i change it, 'cause at this time i don't think that this is only a software/firmware problem.

Regards,

Thanks for the input, guys. As much as I didn't want to go through the hassle, I do agree it's smarter to return it while I can. Hopefully, the next unit will be better.

I had the same problem when i dropped my 1520. Eventually I tried to press the phone on the upside and downside of the screen. It worked like a miracle! After a few months dropped it again and the same problem happened once more. Did the same thing, didn't work. I should state that I broke the protective camera glass, and when I touched the front camera, my phone acted like i was touching the back button. Like I said, pressing didn't work, so, at a time when I was angry, I've bent the phone, and voila! I haven't had the same problem since then!

If still under warranty, send it back to Nokia, I got one off Ebay, has problem, sent back to Nokia repair twice, and they sent me a brand new replacement.

Hmmm... I have heard about these issues, but they don't show up as much on my AT&T 1520. My old Lumia certainly never had touchscreen issues. It is a great phone, but function comes before form.

I actually heeded the advice here and sent it back. eBay totally took care of me, despite the seller never responding, and I had my refund via PayPal the day the phone was delivered.

I purchased from a different seller and this replacement is flawless so far! I'm very happy I didn't settle for the one with issues.

Good choice, The most common cause for this problem seems to be that the phone got flexed to much, it throws the digitizer at a whack, you can remedy the problem by putting pressure on certain points for a bit, but once you get the issue, it pretty much means the phone has sustained some sort of damage and will likely pop back up repeatedly. It's also suggested that the phantom touch is related to the same issue, just not so much "damaged" but mis-aligned (the pitfalls of making such a giant phone lol)

Agreed.
I purchased a factory refurb off eBay. After a short time these same problems occurred. Put in a repair request to MS and they repaired it. Don't know what they did exactly but so far no problems.....About a week now. NC for repair or shipping.
