Curious if anybody on the Northeast US side wore their bands while snow shoveling after the storm?

I did, and while shoveling for 7 hours still not able to leave my property (long driveway), I apparently managed to do 13,284 steps, walk 6.64 miles, climb 11 floors, and only burn 1937 calories!

Would be great if someone wrote a "Shoveling app" for the band to detect that exact motion.

LOL lets hope this kind of app is not needed to often.
Maybe the cold has influence on your metabolism and that is why you only burned a few calories.😃

Probably would have been worth it to put the Band in 'exercise' mode (and shut the screen off to maximize battery life). Probably still wouldn't last 7 hours without some charging breaks, but I hope you didn't shovel for 7 straight hours anyway! :sweaty:

My Band 2 logged 10,000+ steps while shoveling snow.

It's interesting that it under counts normal steps (compared to my far more accurate Fitbit Surge), yet gives me 10k step counts when I probably took just a few hundred real steps while shoveling my driveway and sidewalk.

What did the Fitbit log during shoveling?

Shoveling snow burns 400-600 calories per hour. If you took a break now and then (and if you didn't I am very impressed!) then 1937 calories seems about right.

(I was surprised at how few calories shoveling snow burns!)

I was not wearing it while shoveling because the "gummy" rubber band on the Surge gets hung up on my coat sleeve.

BTW - That is the main reason I bought the Band 2 (because of the smoother and lower profile design). Now that Fitbit released the Blaze (redesigned Surge), I will probably get one and retire the Band 2.

Band/2 measures arm swing to calculate steps. Shoveling should involve lots of arm swing motion...

I wore mine while shoveling, it was useful for heart rate monitoring. Whenever it hit 150 I would take a breather, so it was helpful in not becoming another statistic in the news. I think there were at least 5 heart attack deaths in the area, either from shoveling or just walking in the snow. I heard the ERs had a lot of chest pain cases too. I didn't notice what it measured for steps or calories though.

So what's a better one between the blaze and band2? Is it true that band 2 cannot control music with BT headset on??

Is it true that band 2 cannot control music with BT headset on??

Controlling music/volume works, I use this all the time with my Lumia 950/Band 2/Plantronics BT Headset when I go running. It didn't work at first though, until I discovered there's a bit of a "startup sequence" you need to be aware of probably due to the Bluetooth stack:

-Start a music track on the phone and pause
-Presuming the Band 2 is always paired, turn on the BT headset and connect
-Double-click the Power button which initiates the music control
-Un-pause the music from the Band 2, which should now play through the headset

Basically it seemed that I needed to initiate the music control connection "first" and then have the music play through the headset "second". If you start it the other way around - play music, then try to start the controls - it doesn't seem to want to connect anymore.

Kludgy, and definitely needs some refinement. But technically it does work.

Picking up my band 2 today so excited ! And your music control trick has me even more psyched!!!!!! Thank you:)))

The Fitbit Blaze will be cheaper ($199) and allow you to change bands (nice leather bands available). Fitbit also has a more mature fitness tracking algorithm and continuous heart rate sensor (taking HR readings multiple times a second vs Band 2's once every 5 minutes). Up to 5 day battery life. Nice watch face selection. It is already on Amazon for pre-order.
