Opposed to the experiences jjfairway apparently made, I moved my contacts and calender data from my local outlook installation to the cloud and it has been an eye opening and very positive experience. I use seven different e-mail accounts, all of which I managed from my local Outlook installation.
This is what I did:
Local laptop/desktop based Microsoft Outlook installation = LO
Cloud based Outlook (
www.outlook.com) = CO
a)
Get an account at CO (if you don't already have one).
b)
Remove all e-mail accounts from LO
c)
Add all the e-mail accounts you previously had in LO to CO. If you have multiple e-mail accounts, CO will now be the single aggregator for all of them.
d)
Download and install the Microsoft Outlook Connector. This allows you to add a CO account to your LO (alternatively you can use Outlook 2013 which already has this functionality built in). After doing so, LO will display a new root folder. You now have at least two such root folders:
LOF = root folder you've used up until now (represents your PST or OST file)
COF = root folder you just added (displays the contents of and syncs with your CO account)
The new COF also contains a new set of subfolders including Inbox, Contacts, etc.
e)
Copy all your contacts from LOF/Contacts to COF/Contacts (drag & drop). Do the same for your e-mails. This copies your contacts and your e-mails from your LO installation to the cloud.
f)
Advise LO to use the COF as its
default storage location
Finished.
From now on, any changes you make in LO (contacts, send e-mails, etc) are automatically synched to the cloud, from where your WP device will pick them up and sync correctly. The other way around works just as well. I can't remember the last time I used a cable to sync data or even worried about it... it all all works automagically now!
