OK I have been using the iPhone for years but would like to switch to WP the new Nokia 900. I do have specific needs for my work. I went out and boought a Windows Laptop yesterday with Outlook. I will need for the new new Nokia to be able to sync fully my contacts and calendar when any change is made on either the phone or Laptop. Will the new phone do this. This is a huge deal on the iPhone and am hoping that Windows ie. Outlook will do it also, please help me understand if or how this works.

There are two ways to do this and I don't quite understand the second. The first is to use a "hotmail" email address (easy to get and free) and synch up with your PC using Zune (easy to get and free). This will synch your email and calendar. I just got "honeydoes" so I'll post later about the second.

If you are afraid of the cloud, then, no, you can't do a local sync with Outlook. Not to be overly snarky, but that was popular when Windows Mobile 5.0 was a current smartphone OS.

Simply add your Live ID to Outlook, it will sync your Windows Phone Calendar, Contacts and obviously, E-mail from Hotmail.

You don't need to use any application to sync with Outlook, everything is done over the internet (the "cloud").

@markgrif: Zune doesn't sync Calendar, Contacts and E-mail.

If you are using Microsoft Exchange, it will work great. If you just use outlook, you will need to install the Outlook Connector and then it will show up like outlook .pst folders. You will have an Outlook calendar and then a hotmail/Live calendar. If you use the hotmail calendar, it will sync with hotmail and then it will automatically sync to the WP. Same for contacts. If you already have an Outlook calender or contacts, you will be able to copy them to the live calender/contacts.

Anybody who even tries to use a WP7 over an iPhone is loony. I've been a BB user for over 15 years and I consider myself a heavy user of my mobile devices. I'm a small business owner and run Office/Outlook on my own machine. Have you ever tried to use the Hotmail Connector to copy over your calendar and contacts to your WP7? Why is it that with an iPhone I can plug it in, pick Outlook, and it just works? I'm sorry, I've tried multiple times to get this to work and it's a buggy mess with WP7 and the Hotmail Connector. I have the Nokia Lumia 900 and I can't sell the p.o.s. now.

Opposed to the experiences jjfairway apparently made, I moved my contacts and calender data from my local outlook installation to the cloud and it has been an eye opening and very positive experience. I use seven different e-mail accounts, all of which I managed from my local Outlook installation.

This is what I did:

Local laptop/desktop based Microsoft Outlook installation = LO
Cloud based Outlook (www.outlook.com) = CO

a)
Get an account at CO (if you don't already have one).

b)
Remove all e-mail accounts from LO

c)
Add all the e-mail accounts you previously had in LO to CO. If you have multiple e-mail accounts, CO will now be the single aggregator for all of them.

d)
Download and install the Microsoft Outlook Connector. This allows you to add a CO account to your LO (alternatively you can use Outlook 2013 which already has this functionality built in). After doing so, LO will display a new root folder. You now have at least two such root folders:

LOF = root folder you've used up until now (represents your PST or OST file)
COF = root folder you just added (displays the contents of and syncs with your CO account)

The new COF also contains a new set of subfolders including Inbox, Contacts, etc.

e)
Copy all your contacts from LOF/Contacts to COF/Contacts (drag & drop). Do the same for your e-mails. This copies your contacts and your e-mails from your LO installation to the cloud.

f)
Advise LO to use the COF as its default storage location

Finished.

From now on, any changes you make in LO (contacts, send e-mails, etc) are automatically synched to the cloud, from where your WP device will pick them up and sync correctly. The other way around works just as well. I can't remember the last time I used a cable to sync data or even worried about it... it all all works automagically now! ;)

WP is just a mess for Outlook users...

I tried multiple times to get this to work. Yes, I could drag and drop my contacts from my PC to the Cloud mailbox I set up through Live.com but then they weren't available to use on my PC. The Calendar function never did work right and kept saying I couldn't create subfolders for data when copying my PC's Outlook Calendar folder to the new one on the 'cloud'. Microsoft's cloud is toxic, friends. I'm sure I could get it figured out eventually. But I use a 'cloud' based service within Outlook that would not function properly if I put everything on the cloud. Maybe I'm behind the times by keeping my data on my server/PC. But I can sync and work right away, intuitively, with my iPhone. I really would have liked the WP if only it was simpler to use and made sense. When I have to download a Hotmail connector and be forced to run my data, communications, and organizational tools through Microsoft's cloud there's bound to be bugs, issues, and downtime. No thanks.

WP is simple and it does make sense. Multiple solutions were just posted, these users figured it out, why can't you?
Rather than putting blame on the product, try to figure out what you're doing wrong.

You don't have to download a connector, as this is readily available in Office 2013.
Update your software and stop complaining that you have to download an add in for it to work with your 3+ year old email client.

With all due respect, I have to agree with jjfairway about the difficulty. I have tried several solutions and none has worked. Just today, I tried a5cent's approach (thanks for the detailed instructions, by the way...much appreciated!), unfortunately without success.

I'm trying very hard to love my Windows Phone as much as others seem to love their iPhones. I have a Windows 8 laptop, I'm using Outlook 2010 and still can't get my phone and email / calendar to sync up. I'm not giving up, but I'm certainly disheartened.

I'm not sure I really understand what you are trying to do with regards to Outlook. Are you referring to Outlook in 2010, or are you referring to your Outlook.com email address?

I recently purchased a Lumia 900, and did a Contact sync via the Nokia app from my other phone, but didn't even check my contacts for my outlook.com/Hotmail.com account (I forgot that I had a few listed as I never use them). Only after reading this post did I check it; sure enough, my contacts from my Hotmail account had synced to my 'People'. I checked how I initially set up my email, and I apparently checked all boxes from my email to sync to my phone.

I have the same Hotmail account added to my Outlook 2010 (Office 2010). And I also noticed that my contacts were listed there as well. I deleted one contact from Hotmail.com (web client) and it was also deleted from my phone; I deleted a different contact (from my Hotmail account) from the Lumia, and it was also removed from Hotmail.com (web client) contact list. I then deleted another contact from Outlook 2010 (for the same email account), and the contact was also deleted from my phone and the Hotmail.com (web client).

So, if this is what you mean by syncing’ the sync function seems to work well for me, and I did nothing special with regards to setting it up.

I guess a few more details would be helpful :)

I am using Outlook, but not Exchange. I would like to be able to have Outlook sync with my phone with regard to sent messages and calendar. I have four email accounts (two business accounts for different domains powered by GoDaddy, one Gmail, one Outlook.com). When I send an email from my phone for either of the business accounts, I can't see a record of that email in Outlook on my PC. Also, the Outlook calendar doesn't show on my phone.

As I'm sure you've already surmised, I'm not the most tech-savvy. I'm not a complete illiterate, but I definitely feel that I'm over my head in this situation. I'm in the midst of building a business, which means I'm overly nervous about making a mistake and inadvertently deleting emails / accounts. Yeah, I'm a little paranoid.

Thanks for any and all help! I really don't want to switch to iPhone / Android.

I would imagine that your Gmail and Outlook.com accounts are working correctly in that if you send from your phone, the sent mail shows in Outlook. At least it should, because the convention for those accounts is to do that. The GoDaddy accounts might not follow that convention if you can only use them as POP accounts. You should check the settings through whatever interface that GoDaddy gives you to see if there are options to sync the account through multiple devices. In most cases, this means you need to make sure that the account is using IMAP.

The difference between IMAP and POP is that the mail server recognizes different devices as being different. POP will download to all devices from the inbox, but any action you take on one device is basically all you can do with it. For instance, if you move a mail or delete a mail from device A, device B will no longer be able to see/download that mail. With IMAP, the action is reflected more accurately on the server, so the mail would show in the other folder it was moved to or show as having been deleted (by being in your deleted folder). With POP, you don't usually get the option to sync folders other than the inbox.

I hope that makes sense to you. In short, check with GoDaddy to see if you can sync your sent folders. After doing that, you *might* have to remove the account from your phone and set it up again.

@absst16

I'm with Go Daddy and came across your post.

Are you still having difficulties with getting your Go Daddy email set up on your Windows Phone?
If so I would be more than happy to help. Please feel free to reply or to send me a private message.

Thanks to @smsmith1975 for assisting our customer!

Please forgive the slow response...I have been surviving the past month or so by using Gmail Calendar for business purposes :/

Thanks for your insights re POP / IMAP. I've reached out to Ken @ GoDaddy in the hopes of finding a solution to this problem. Worst case scenario, I'll need to decide which is easier: swapping out the Windows Phone or GoDaddy.
