Stuck on Gears after factory reset

I was having issues with notifications not work and live tiles not updating so I figured I'd just do a hard reset/factory restore and it'd fix everything. The factory reset started and it's now been almost 4 hours and they are still spinning. I have tried to do some of the tips given for the 920 when it had the same issue but none of them have worked. I also don't know of anyway to reflash/unbrick a 1020.

I've tried:
Input these keys on the following sequence, press them one key at a time:
Volume up
Volume down
Power key
Volume down

and also tried holding the camera+power+vol down buttons and that doesn't work either. Tried both ways with SIM in and out

I'm at a loss, anyone have this issue and know a fix or know if I can flash a factory image? This phone has not been modded or tweaked or anything at all before this

i tried all the stuff you did, nothing showed up. after that i let the battery drain down completely about 5-6 times and then the gears again showed up and after about 10-15 mins it automatically restarted and the phone was BRAND NEW! this issue has become very common with windows phone 8 devices especially the LUMIAs... :( i know it frustrating..

So I know I just posted this but it just made it past. I didn't discharge the battery but I would randomly soft reset the phone if nothing happened after 20 min. It just now came up!!! YAY!!!!!

I have no idea what caused it to be fixed, could be just waiting it out, taking the SIM out or my random resets but it's back! What a weird issue!

Hell, maybe all I had to do was complain about it and it fixes itself! :)

This is such a PITA that Nokia or Microsoft should address asap since things like this should not be happening on a mobile operating system if the user wants to factory reset it shouldn't be a hassle or a chance that it won't boot.........

Wow I was about to hard reset because I'm trading my yellow 1020 for a white one so now I'm frightened to do it.. Should I just delete all my apps and contacts and trade it? Should I chance it and factory reset it? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

That is awesome you got it fixed ! I did a reset a few days after i got my L1020 for the very same reason and im glad nothing happened. Wouldnt want to reset it anymore xD just to save me from a heart attack

Ugh, I was having problems with BT & Wifi, so I figured I'd just bit the bullet & hard reset. I'm stuck on spinning gears for >45 mins so far. I'm guessing that isn't good.

If you need to reset your phone, you better have a back up because that thing is gonna be spinning.

I had some connectivity issues where my LTE showed 4 or 5 bars, but no data. So i did a factory reset and that damn thing spinned for literally 8 hours and had to charge it up 3 times during the span. I had already contacted nokia for a swap and then at 8 hours or so, my wife says, your phone restarted, im like say what? I had given up.

The connectivity issue was fixed, but still moving forward with a swap, but i think i will have issues with another 1020 as well, nokia qc is lacking. How does a spinning wheel go for hours? I've never experienced a master reset last longer than 10 minutes let alone 8 hours on any other phone outside of nokia.. Same thing happened with my previous 920 which was 6 hours. horrible experience.

2 hrs & a reset using Vol +/- & power and it reset 15 mins later. I was using my 820 while the 1020 was down. 820 is pretty solid.

My 710, 900, 920 and 1020 have all done this. Defintiely something that needs to be addressed. Unacceptable that it's still happening.

Arg!! Wish I had looked here first before resetting ... several hours ago. Joy.:unhappysweat::angry:

Dammit, I did the reset to partially fix the "other" storage issue, mine was at 5.5Gb. I had a friend try it on his 928 yesterday and all he had to do were the weird code and it work so i thought I was safe and I guess I wasn't. Been trying everything to get my Nokia Lumia 1020 back and I am worried that if I go to the Microsoft store to get it replaced they will charge me the $50 replacement fee for the warranty even though this is a known issue with the Nokia Lumia line.

Stuck on running gears for over 8 hours!! Nokia Lu... - Nokia Support Discussions

This method works for me with same problem on 920:
From the 'stuck in gears' position - anything after 30 mins of gears for me - I do the following:
1 Soft reset - hold power and volume (down), until it vibrates.
2 On seeing NOKIA logo do the following keypresses (one after another):
Volume up
Volume down
Power key
Volume down
3 Phone will continue booting into gears.
4 Wait 10 mins. Phone reboots with full WIndows logo and set up screen.

Can't believe Nokia haven't sorted this. It seems to be a common problem with several models in the Lumia line.

I finally got it to work this morning about an hour after I posted this but now I keep getting an account error with the main account and it is dying very fast.

Well, I just worked up the courage to hard reset my lumia 1020 after I couldn't connect to my Nokia account. Been 90 minutes of spinning gears. I had to give up my 920 for the same reason. Surprised this hasn't been fixed yet. That being said I've wanted to a replacement for this one anyway. The plastic around the bottom of the phone seems to have defective adhesive because the entire housing around the micro usb charger makes a click sound. I had an N9 with the same problem. Just kind of afraid that my replacement will have light leaks from the soft buttons. Hate ******* light leaks!

Had this issue a couple of month ago. Tried everything but nothing worked. I had to send it to
the repair center :/

I have the same issues. I went through 7 920's before At&t sent a 1020 to me. The 1020 has been just as glitchy and a poor experience. Hit the hard reset 3 hours ago and the gears are still spinning. I should have known something was wrong, when I first unboxed it and it had an error with my backup from the 920. This situation is beyond old.

This is simply unacceptable. I should have known better than to try to hard reset my L1020 to erase the data before putting it on eBay.... This spinning gears thing has happened twice in the past with two other L920 I've owned. I cannot believe this hasn't been corrected....I would hate to think of all the phones Microsoft and Nokia have replaced under warranty to fix this issue. Both of my other L920 were replaced due to this and I'll try to get a shiny new L1020 from ATT to correct this one.... Come on guys!!!!
