No, i don't think it's dead. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, then release. Press power button briefly, and it should boot up.
Every device seems to have a special way in which to do a full hardware-initiated reboot. This is built into the design for those times when the software causes a hard lockup. I wouldn't be too worried unless it keeps happening. If you ever find a way to consistently reproduce a hard lockup, definitely report it to MS through official channels.
I got the Surface 2 this afternoon and mine does this all the time, Every time the screen times out or I press the power key to lock the tablet then the screen won't come back on and I have to reset the surface which is very annoying and I am worried this might damage the tablet ? Should I return it to the shop and get s replacement or should I contact Microsoft or should I wait for a update?.
Its 8.1, it has been doing this to Surface's since the preview came out!
Is the screen meant to be left on when not using it ? I just assumed it worked like WP etc that you could hit power button to lock it and turn off screen when not using and then press power button to wake it back up again ?

Mine worked great until 9+2 updates last night. I could not wake up this morning despite being plugged in. Tried the hold down power button, let go and touch Windows button. It works now. That's more or less the same three-step voodoo I went through with Lumia 920 last spring.
It's nice to find a community where people like their MS products.
