Well after a few months back (last year in fact) when I bought the Surface 2, I also bought Microsoft's Surface Ethernet Adaptor.
Surprise surprise, the Surface Ethernet Adaptor and the Surface 2 aren't compatible, and I felt cheated as Microsoft didn't tell the details until after 1 week of my purchase. But there's a workaround, thanks to a smart man with his blog.
So just go to this link and exactly follow his instructions: Ethernet on Surface RT with Windows RT 8.1 (Updated) | DigitalManBlog
It works flawlessly, and if you're wondering what USB Ethernet adaptor to get, you can use the one he recommends or use Microsoft's (like the one I'm using now, it works!)
Just to answer anyone who's wondering if the Surface 2 could use cable in case wifi isn't available - it can!
