Ok so I preordered my Surface Pro 2, that I am going to pick up tomorrow after work :D However I preodered the 64gb version and I am thinking... Should I shell out the extra 100 for the 128gb version, or should I just get a 64gb microSD card for 49 on Amazon?

Is there going to be much of a problem with having that extra 64gb on the SD card vs. the primary partition? I am coming from a 32gb Surface RT, and I never felt like I had any space issues. And seeing as a Pro 2 is full fledged Windows, I can install programs primarily to the SD card, sure they will take up some space on the main drive, but I'm thinking it would be ok... Anyone have experience with this?

Maybe its just better to shell out for the 128GB version? I mean later on I could add a 64gb SD card to that and be set :P but money is tight as of now, so if I go with the 128gb version I doubt I will see an SD card in it anytime soon.

I also have a 320gb external drive that I will be using. Just don't want to always have to carry it around :P

Thanks in advanced everyone!

It depends on how much programs you want to install. 64 should be ok for the average user but you might need 128 if you have specific needs. I would install my common used programs on the SSD and keep the SD card for file storage.

I also pre ordered the 64 and think I should have went with the 128gb now.

On a device like the Pro 2 I probably would have went with the 128GB model. Programs like Photoshop and x86 games will eat up my HDD pretty fast.

Thanks guys, I'm gonna ask if I can move up to the 128GB version tomorrow, if I can't Ill order the SD card...

I'm thinking of waiting until I get my pre order and than taking it to futureshop and see if I can't exchange for the 128.

64GB gives you only about 26gb usable space. If you're the type that enjoys cleaning out the system to ensure not 'junk' apps or files are in it, then this is enough. Otherwise in about 1yr, you'll find the storage space irritating. 1k for a laptop, and it only includes 64gb.... MS really needs to get it together.

The device directly after a spec jump is always the best value. So in my opinion one should buy the 64(if you really don't need much storage) or the 256 because it jumps up in RAM. With The 128 you're paying a few hundred more for a bit of storage so not very good value.

I'm sure with anyone I get I'm gonna be going through and freeing up space :P

Good points, I find myself going back and forth, but I may just end up keeping the 64gb version. Could really put that 100 bucks towards something else :P Maybe the purse my gf wants.

I looked at the 64, and I could have made it work... but I'm glad I got the 128. I don't keep media on my drive (got a 64 gig microsd for music and books) so I actually have quite a bit of empty space. But I like to have the extra "head room", i think it helps the computer run smoother if the HD is not always nearly full.

If you change the page file from "manage automatically" to the range 16MB-512MB, you free up 8GB of space. The pagefile will never grow past 16mb if you do this, illustrating how unnecessary it is to have it set to 8GB. The only downside is if you have a BSOD, 512MB might not be large enough for the memory dump. Which means you can't use the SDK debug dump analyzer to look at exactly what caused the problem. However the surface hardly has enough space for the symbols in the first place, so this isn't a concern.

I have the 64GB surface pro 1 and I generally have 20GB free. I was thinking about getting a microsd but I don't even need it. $100+ for the 128GB is not worth it imo, that's rather large markup. As long as you have another computer you can remotely transfer files to, space shouldn't really be an issue. Music and videos can be streamed. There's enough room for one or two large games at a time. I would not spend $100 on the larger version.

Remember- the built in "disk cleanup" is your friend- ccleaner and other alternatives are not really necessary nor even as thorough, and are potentially dangerous. For example, while many consider ccleaner to be good, it still includes a "registry cleaner" which is potentially hazardous snake oil. What else is it "cleaning"? Just stick with windows disk cleanup.
