Surface Pro 2 apparently being discontinued.

I went to a Microsoft store with my dad so he could get a replacement Lumia 920 (his screen got cracked) and asked an employee if the SP2 would be getting a discount due to the SP3. She said it was instead being discontinued and would receive no discount. Another employee backed this up. So, for those of you who want a SP2 instead of a SP3, you'd better hurry. Especially if you want the 256 GB variant, which seems to be the most popular.

The online Microsoft store appears to only list the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 3 as being for sale. They also have the Surface Pro new/refurbed on clearance.

I suspect that the Microsoft employees are correct. There was a huge inventory of (1st gen) Surface RT and Surface Pro devices available... and still are. The 2nd gen devices were in far less quantity and I don't think there is any "surplus". The fact that Microsoft themselves are no longer selling the Surface Pro 2 tells me that they believe that there is enough units in the retail channels to satisfy any demand.

But I do believe that it is possible for one-off sales... at individual Best Buy locations (based on their inventory).

They will sell out the inventory of the SP2. It makes no sense they would discontinue them with unsold ones sitting in the self. Hell, he can still buy RTs.

Makes sense, they will just be phased out, I doubt they have a lot of backstock of them, and plan to sell them in the next few months while the SP3 is being distributed. This is a good thing for myself, as I can get a SP3 with MS Complete Care if my store has no SP2 in stock when I bring it in broken :-D. Although I'm pretty happy with my SP2, I would be interested in the SP4 with Broadwell.

Sorry but this is beyond hard to swallow. You do not both "discontinue" a product and not discount. They have not even officially discontinued Surface Pro yet, which is now heavily discounted, and it was a poor seller in comparison to Surface Pro 2. It is Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 that actually make money for the company at this point. BTW, in the Scottsdale, AZ store which I will actually name instead of referring to some unidentified location, they continue to push Surface Pro 2 and do not even have anyone near the Surface Pro 3 pre-order sign. I have yet to have a single in store person even mention its existence to me. The sum total of acknowledgement tromp the store has been one email from a rep asking if I wanted to pre-order. Oh, if they were stupid enough to discontinue a successful product for which the released dedicated (and expensive) accessories a few months ago, they deserve to lose the mobile computing market.

While you are correct in observing that often a discount accompanies something that is discontinued, that is not always the case. Depending upon the inventory in the retail channel, there may be an official advertised discount (and with it certain accounting issues), or it may be a soft-discount on a per-store basis. For the Surface RT and Surface Pro there was a glut of inventory... due to a massive manufacturing run by Microsoft and lack of sales. For the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, inventory levels were dramatically lower. It was difficult for many to buy a Surface 2 before Christmas 2013. On this and other forums people were keeping everyone posted as to where and when to buy one. Surface Pro 2 devices were equally difficult to find.

There is no glut of Surface Pro 2 units in the retail channel. Any excess is not enough to warrant any official discount.

I really enjoy visiting the Scottsdale store, I try to stop by every time I'm down in the valley. They continue to push the SP2 because they have units to move. The closer we get to SP3 availability, the more difficult it will be to sell SP2's. Microsoft has already removed the SP2 from their online store.

I've made a very extensive argument stating just that. Needless to say, it isn't a very popular view around here.

What ISPs someone buys the Surface pro 2 today and covers it with extended warranty for 2 more years with Accidental Damage Protection? Microsoft discontinues the Surface Pro 2 and next year or so the person's surface pro 2 gets damaged. What will Microsoft do? Provide the customer the Surface Pro 3?

If, in fact, the SP2 is discontinued, and IMO I think it is, my thinking is yes.

Buy the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 on Windows 8.1 - Microsoft Store

It may in fact be discontinued, however no official announcement has been made. I will know more on Friday as my company has been piloting them for a little over a month now and intended to bulk purchase them soon. I will have word from our corporate sales rep so I will have the low down.
You can still buy them at the link I supplied which can be found by simply searching Surface Pro 2 on the Microsoft Store

Interesting. The kickstand on my SP2 recently became bent, so it no longer folds completely flat. I was thinking I would see about using my warranty to replace it. I've also got an SP3 on order. I was planning on taking it with me to the store on Friday to see if I can get it replaced - I'll report back...

I'm thinking there's still a few SP2s in inventory. I'd be surprised if you get a SP3. And if you get a SP2, wonder what they would say if you said you'd wait for a SP3 since they're almost the same price.
