Im trying to determine if I should take my surface in.
Because of a loud fan that doesnt shut off.

I have already installed all the updates.

Has anyone installed Speedfan?

I have a Temp1 reading that is overflowing (4.29e8). Can anyone confirm that they are getting that too?

Im going to use my surface for a day or 2 and see if the fan keeps coming on whenever I turn on the screen.

Any feedback is helpful.

Maybe it will help, maybe it won't, but one thing to try is a reset by holding the power button and the volume button (I don't recall ATM if up or down - try either), until the PC resets. It takes an inordinately long time - sometimes close to 30 seconds, so give it at least that long before you try the other volume button. It gives you kind of the same effect of shutting down a desktop by using the power button. But the way I understand it, the Surface doesn't completely shut down when doing a shutdown or restart the normal ways (though I could be mistaken on this part). You will not lose any data other than unsaved data in open applications, so close your apps first. You can even shut down, and then do this. You'll see the Surface logo, then a flash of the UFEI (is that the right acronym?) screen - the replacement of the old BIOS screen. At that point you can let go. Hopefully this will help, maybe it won't, but it's worth a shot.

I suggest leaving the device on and allowing it to run for a day to allow Windows Search Indexing to complete. I've seen this same type of behavior on the Surface RT and Surface 2 (as well as my Windows 8.1 notebooks).

Good thinking about the hard reset.

I had forgotten about windows search indexing. Thanks for the tip.
I ended up taking my SP3 in for exchange because my kickstand clicks when I open it.

I hope the new one is better

Unfortunately Speedfan is unable to detect the CPU fan. I am unaware of any programs that can monitor the speed of the fan in real time for the SP3. If anyone finds one, PLEASE let me know.
