Yes it does take some battery since it is always waiting to detect double tap gestures to unlock the phone.

You need to install the app separately. It doesn't come with the Black update.

I have a lumia 920 , have a bigger capacity battery. Umm it takes around 5-10% I believe , that's what I noticed when I turned it of.
