The slowest site on the Internet?

Dan, I like coming here for Windows news, but (for me) windowscentral is THE slowest site I have ever visited. This is on my i7, 16GB Surface Book with 100GB down home internet.

Any idea why? Is it all the ads? Almost painful enough to just close the browser tab sometimes.

Thanks.

Hi there,

I'm sorry you're having problems with the site. I've moved this thread to the Site Discussion forum where tech staff will be better able to address this.

I knew something was amis. When I first joined up (for the Laptop giveaway) things were blazing! The last few days though, have not been so much fun. Any idea on a timeline for resolution?

Hi there,

I am pretty sure it is the ads. They seem to load VERY slow. The site or page (I am on) will just hang, and my clicks don't register. Then I will see an add frame fill in on the side...or ad ad will refresh, and then the page or click will respond.

Not sure why ads would affect your side so much more than other sites.

I will even get the bottom pop up (on Edge) "windowscentral.com is not responding"

Similar problem using Edge. I get the Win Cen not responding and then Edge shuts down. I must say that I don't have the problem on the Android site or iMore; only Win Central. Today is the first time in a week or so that I have visited Win Cen and it's the same slow load, error out and Edge shutting down. Tried it with Chrome and it does the same. Has to be this particular site.

Unusable at this present time for me.

Using Chrome, it seems much better today. Yesterday the little message in the bottom left of the window was saying it was trying to load this and that and the other thing non stop, but today it loads like normal and the messages stop.

yes, i can confirm, the site is almost unusable with Edge/IE, i tried it on different PCs

This issue gets brought up quite a bit. You'd think WC would address it.

It's getting worse, not better.

I used to be able to avoid all the ads and shenanigans by using Ad Block + and then I added Ghostery as well. But ever since the "rebuild" I get ads even with those two extensions enabled. It's really ugly as what results is the same ad repeating all down the page.

Tell me 7 times about product X on every page and it just makes me 7 times more resistant to buying it.

The worst part is that the functionality of the site is borked. It will not behave in ways that forums traditionally have and everything you want to do has become over complicated or downright impossible.

But at least ads are being served. There is that, though I fail to see the benefit of it to myself...

And for the record, this is not an official statement. I've retired from staff and cease to consider myself as such even though the change has not been made on my profile as of yet.

I only view Windows and Android central from the Android apps, websites are slow and buggy with the ads and they actually have good content so I would rather not NEED ad block to enjoy their site. Windows app for windows central is a joke in comparison and they don't have an app in the windows store for Android central.

But if you want an atrocious and horrible website, visit phonearena, it's the worst site I've ever been to. They have more ads than content, full screen ads that appear as your reading an article, and audio ads. Typing in their comments my input lags like I'm using a dial up windows 98 machine.

I rarely go to the site because of the adds and slow page loads. I use a forum reader to just hang out in the forums. Makes things so much better.

It seems hit and much as day to day. Decided to give the iOS app a shot. Seems good. However, it would be nice if they can sort out the slowdowns on the site.

Try just using ublock and setting global rules for the site. I find it blocks all ads. It's always a pity to me when I block websites, especially ones that I wish to support regularly like Windows Central. I wish to support the site by clicking on the ads, only to find they are nonsensical, somewhat suspicious and generally low-quality (Unlike Paul Thurrott's site for example, where I visit the ads regularly.)

I thought using the Windows 10 app would help, but the app is even worse than the website functionality wise. *_*

Really though, people should not have to go through so much just to make a site tolerable in terms of functionality and impact on system resources. It's 2017 and the site runs like 1997 dial-up.
