The Video App - What is Microsoft doing?

The Xbox Video app hit a rating of just 1.7 stars after the latest update. Is MS even concerned about its applications?! The app barely gets attention from the developers with just repeated bug fixes and we are waiting an eternity to have features added to the application. But even the recent bug fixes messed everything up. First Skype, then Music, and now Video! All are a failure in their own operating ecosystem. Will Microsoft ever do anything about it?!

May I asked what's actually wrong with it? I only use it to watch movies I purchased in the Xbox Video Store, and it's working great for that. For everything else I'm using Moliplayer Pro, as it supports far more formats.

Personally I think Xbox Video would get more attention if it was more like Netflix and we could pay a monthly or yearly subscription for unlimited access to Tv shows and discounted movie rentals.

This is what they did with xbox music though and that's still terrible.

I'd agree it's disappointing MS can't take more care with their homegrown apps. Given the lack of high quality alternatives in the store even for basic functions like music and video, MS need to put some effort in.

I like Xbox music but its definitely in need of an update however I still use it and it pretty much covers my music requirements of being able to download any album/song for free and store it in a playlist, and the radio by artists feature is great.

Anyways back on topic... Xbox video, Microsoft really needs to take that next step with the video app and allow unlimited access to all it content or like I said above unlimited tv shows and discounted movie rentals or even better a free movie on weekends :)

Iv tried Netflix's, Hulu and Quickflix but neither of them do it for me as they don't seem to have the latest and greatest where as Xbox Videos does. For example Walking Dead season 5 and American Horror Season 4 both of which have just been released on TV and can't be found on Netflix's, Hulu or Quickflix (correct me if I'm wrong) where as Xbox Video does but I'm not willing to pay 40 odd $ per season to watch them when there available on tv for free.

Hey there dKp1977! Here in India we don't get any such services like videos and movies, that is limited to the US region. The Video and the Music app are very basic here, and often crash after the recent update. I'm a huge MS fan and I tend to stick to MS apps rather than 3rd party apps but its these issues that disappoint me and lot of us here. There are times when the videos won't play further, showing an error and the interface of both the apps are far behind those of Moliplayer and MixRadio! There are times I feel that the aesthetic design of the apps do not reflect or complement that of the Modern UI, like how the mentioned 3rd party apps do!

The reason for that is simple. TV channels pay a lot of money to exclusively broadcast these shows. They earn money through commercials. Netflix, Hulu and the likes use a subscription model, which doesn't allow them to throw large quantities of money out the window just to broadcast shows when they're new. The same goes for movies. Microsoft on the other hand paid much money to have these shows available at the get go, which is why you have to pay these 40 bucks in order to be able to watch them.
I agree though that Microsoft should consider offering a subscription model like Netflix and its competitors.

My main question remains though, what's wrong with the app?

I wonder if any additional streaming subscription services would even make any money. Redbox's streaming subscription service failed, even with the backing of Verizon. Verizon's Redbox Instant video streaming service to shut down | Reuters
