a tiny small arrow sign appears on signal strength..it seams data transfer..what data and where

It could be anything. The phone is exchanging information be that data or text info, location etc. If you have wi-fi enabled see if this stops it. Also see what apps / programs you have open. It could be a web browser refreshing itself.
