The only advantage is getting new features quickly, before your carrier releases it. Right now, DP brought live folders, notification center and many more features and functions.

If you want a complete list search for it on this site. Look for windows phone 8.1/8.1.1.

The DP is the same OS update you will get from a carrier rollout if you wish to wait. It is completely safe from what i experience and listening to others. Might see some hiccups here and there. It's almost unanimous that this update caused slight performance degradation, some will deny, but it doesn't impede of your WP experience.

You might as well use it, it'll give your phone a new lease of life.
