Actually, I just got my Lumia 521 a week ago and followed the instructions at this link to sync multiple Google calendars, including shared calendars:

Set Up Multiple Calendars with Windows Phone - Google Apps Help

I had no problems setting this up.

I think it's also location specific. I'm in Australia. When I try to go directly to the sync setting pages detailed in the link you gave, it only takes me to some default info about setting up mobile apps. It doesn't take me to the settings page. As I said in my post, there are hacks to get around this, but it's not straightforward for everyone to set up multiple Google Calendars in WP8

...you may want to go the iPhone route as I find that a lot of iPhone users that I know just want things to be as simple as possible.
This cracked me up. I've never used an iPhone, but there's a lady at church who had a Samsung Focus (Gen 1 WP7), and she hated it. Couldn't stand it. Couldn't wait until it was time she could get a new phone because she was going to get an iPhone. She wouldn't give me the chance to show her how to do what she was wanting - she just wanted rid of it.

The other day at church, a phone discussion popped up, and she said, "I hate my iPhone. I wish I had a Windows Phone again. It was so simple, and this iPhone is such a pain to figure out how to do things." It was all I could do to keep my mouth shut.
